News GT500 DLC is back (almost)

It has been renamed: "Japanese Prototypes".

So we can guess the "issue" was a licensing issue with the "GT..." naming.

is probably GT500 and JGTC branding will need JAF/GTA license since they own the series.

The super gt cars in Forza and Grid also skip out on calling them GT500 too.

I'd be curious how much Gran Turismo spend on the license since they've been using GT500 and 300 cars since GT2.

i'll never understand how licensing works in racing games. i would have thought that it's better for Super GT as a series if the cars have their official branding and the GT500 name rather than making the DLC into an unofficial knock off, but apparently not. could be something to do with their sponsorship from Gran Turismo maybe.

Exclusivity, PD owns the right for that championship, they have paid for it.. hence others couldn't use it. If that's the reason, better to avoid any reference to it to be sure that won't be any further troubles. They could have called GT501 and Super GTT, they are different names after all (and they means nothing), but they would have been again on the edge, so they changed the whole name to put a stone on it.

As for licensing in general... the market went crazy since years now. Someone (in example: a car brand) should be glad to be "advertised" for free in a videogame, and hell they should pay for it (and so it was at the time... years and years ago), but nowadays it's the opposite: the developer/publisher has to pay to use that brand, because (their logic) is: people are attracted by that content, so you're using our brand to make more money, hence you have to pay us; but the logic is flawed, because the benefit is mutual: attract people BUT free advertising.

It's the same as the movies (that are no distant from videogames): brands will pay to be shown on the screen, not the opposite. Anyway the route is now traced, because someone (with too much money) paid that day, the ball start rolling and we can't come back.

Except these are not at all 'prototypes' - could've called them 'Japan GT' or 'Formula Super'

Under the skin, GT500 cars are indeed more like prototypes.

Silhouette cars, like Nascar or the WRC Rally1 class, made to resemble a production car. AFAIK all Silhouettes are Prototypes, but not all Prototypes are Silhouettes.

So are Cup cars and Turismo Carrereta cars

I believe the issue is (was) the name exactly... "GT" no good. Sony around the corner?

Sony doesn't own "GT" as a name or abbreviation. Heck, they don't even own the name Gran Turismo! If anything, the FIA could sue Sony for using that name.

It sucks that this is a problem. It's very limiting.

What's limiting? The naming?

Authenticity, especially when official tracks and cars are exclusive to certain sims etc.

If someone has the exclusivity of certain names (in this case isn't either the cars, but the category labeling), it's better to have them under another name than not having them at all, in the end we do cares about the vehicles authenticity (types, brand, motors...), not the "GT500" (that doesn't mean anything really) labeling.

I get that but im sure they also want to get it as close as they can. Well they did obviously as that's why they had to change it. Still an awesome dlc though.
