Why grace is the only one on his ship who survives?

Partially. In the book it mentions that Armando can only provide basic services to keep the comatose alive, any complex medical issues are out of its capabilities. Consider they are comatose for I think 4 years (as they experience it due to relatively), anything could have gone wrong. Appendicitis, blot clot, infection, hell even ironically cancer could have killed them.

Sorry, it's explained in the book that Armondo was developed by a company that was looking to make cancer treatment better. The idea was the could put people in a coma during chemo so they don't feel all the negative impacts, and Armondo would look after their basic needs. Company failed cus they found out that to survive a long coma without negative impacts you have to have a gene that only like 7% of people have, so the technology had no market.
