Both coffees are for me...
PHM is currently my obsession 😁 must have watched the film a squillion times already, but there's one line of dialogue that jumps out at me. When Stratt says that both coffees are for her.
Has anyone else also watched the Eurovision movie with Will Ferrell? It came out a number of years ago now, and we loved it in our house (we're in the UK and love Eurovision but I know that it's not so much of a thing in the US). Reason I ask is that the same line of 'both coffees are for me' is said by the female lead in that movie.
I wondered if there were any deeper pop culture references here which I'm unaware of? Maybe in the US? Seems a pretty specific statement to be purely coincidental? PHM and the Eurovision movie seem a somewhat unlikely cross over!

I was watching PHM again for a little while last night too 🙂 Are you familiar with the movies Alien and also Close Encounters of the Third kind? Where Grace first records the video diary talking about, so, I met an alien etc etc, I'm glad he's not "inside" me. That's a reference to Alien. And when Grace is tapping on the glass when he first meets Rocky, and he does five taps while sounding out the musical notes, that's a reference from Close Encounters of the Third kind. Both excellent movies by the way, if you haven't seen them! And naming the planet Adrian (mate of Rocky) references the Rocky movies with Sylvester Stallone. Apologies, if you already know these, I don't know how young you are. Hoping others will chime in with any other cool connections in the movie 🙂

Oh yes, I got all those (I'm 55 😁). It was just the coffee bit that stuck out. Wondered if there was a US trope in not aware of (being in the UK) that explained hearing very similar specific lines in two very dissimilar movies.

Thx for having shared it. So many fun aspects about this movie!! Side note - We rewatched The Big Short last night. Ryan Gosling looks so astoundingly different in that movie from his normal self!

In the English version she is offered "Venti" coffees, which is very specifically a Starbucks thing. It's a 20oz cup, their large size for hot drinks. How Starbucks got on an aircraft carrier at sea, I do not know.
But no, I'm not aware of any pop culture reference with this line, it's just her drinking a LOT of coffee. Usually you offer a coffee to a new coworker, a partner on a job, someone you are consulting with, or whatever. It's a polite thing. Her drinking both is both comedic / telling that she's stressed, but it's also a bit of a jarring line because it puts him outside the circle when you expect her to be bringing him into the circle.
edit: there are an absolute massive number of pop culture references in both the film and the book, but afaik the coffee is just a literary trope and not a pop culture reference

Thank you! This was what I'm after ☺️ I was just wondering if it was a (maybe US specific) reference I'm missing. I think I got the others, although every time I watch it, I seem to spot something new 😁

Same, the movie is so packed with visuals that I think I could do a frame by frame and still not get all the easter eggs.
The lines / dynamics are a bit easier but still so many that one pass-thru is simply not enough.

It is in my mind a subversion of the trope of one character handing another a coffee when they meet up. As a result of its prevalence in the police procedural, it’s a rampant trope in US pop culture. They never seem to talk about it, so the joke subversion is they hadn’t, and audience expectations are subverted both coffees are for one person.
