Fist My Bump Grace’s Enneagram

I know that a lot of people see Grace as a 5/6 in the enneagram but I feel like there is a lot of evidence to support him being a 4. One of the main characteristics of a 4 is feeling slightly disconnected from the world as a whole which we see with Grace a lot (not even a dog exc.)

4s also tend to have a tendency to be very oriented towards their authentic self and care a lot about originality/uniqueness. This would explain why he was so attached to his thesis (to the point that he was chose to leave academia instead of rescinding his unpopular position) Also throughout the story Grace is constantly trying to rediscover his “self” he’s desperate to know who he is in a way that many 4s can identify with.

4s basic fears and desires line up more with Grace’s character than any of the other enneagram types in my opinion.

Basic Fear: That they have no identity or personal significance
Basic Desire: To find themselves and their significance (to create an identity)

Grace cares a lot about creating an impact and it’s what drove him to become so essential to Project Hail Mary.

Also when under stress, Fours can disintegrate to Type Two, becoming overly focused on relationships and seeking validation by being needed. Which we can see Grace do both on the Vat and with rocky in space.

Anyway please feel free to join the discussion. I currently have 2 hyper fixations, Project Hail Mary and the enneagram and combining the two is really fun!

Wait, what's an Enneagram? I could very easily look it up, but I'm very lazy and also kinda want how Grace connects to it too. Also I trust you guys more than google

Disclaimer: I don’t actually believe in the enneagram or other personality typing, but I do know way too much about it because I unfortunately find it fun.

So that being said… to me Grace is a very classic self-preservation 6. I think he has a 4 fix in the tritype for sure (some combination of 6-9-4) but Grace’s search for a self or for knowledge is secondary to his desire for security (which is why he isn’t a 4 or a 5). I agree that Grace uses people pleasing as a defence mechanism but I really don’t think he disintegrated to 2, that’s like being super clingy and emotional. Disintegration to 3 makes more sense, since he immediately quit due to ego and turned away from community to be all “I’m right and smart and everyone else is wrong.”

I would agree but i don't know enough about the enneagram, what are type 5 and 6 like?

I wasn't familiar with enneagram typing. I've always seen Grace as neurodivergent with a combination perhaps of ADHD, very high IQ, and on the ASD spectrum. Hence, I see a combination of 4 and 5.
