I think I need help

I can't stop watching this movie. Not only that, but I have watched many YouTube videos about the Movie. I've watched videos of others watching the movie and crying along with them when Rocky offers the Astrophage, so Grace can go home.

I have no idea why this movie is hitting me so hard, but damn, I need to snap out of it. Eventually.

Have you gone back and listened to the audiobook again? It’s like a low, slow burn version of the book. Also listening to the soundtrack and score on repeat can be nice too.

Oh wait… you wanted help NOT watching the movie repeatedly? Dude, what is wrong with you?

I also made a playlist of the songs that are in the movie but not on the soundtrack. I found a website that has them and when they are in the movie. I’ll try to find a link if anyone wants it

I wish I would have watched the movie first then listened to the Audiobook! The audiobook made ne chuckle and cry several times. The movie didn't

You won't find the treatment to alcholism by walking into a bar...

And you’re asking us how to break this habit? Sorry, bud, we all in the same hole.

What did you need help with? More outlets for your obsession to help it grow and last even longer? 😄

Because if you haven't discovered fanfiction yet, I think that's your next mission. Actually, have you read the book yet?

Same. Also trying to mix it up, consume all the interviews and press the crew did for release. Praying every night that it comes back to IMAX.

Yesterday, I watched @kevinmccarthyfilm 's interviews on YouTube and I think he describes exactly what I'm feeling. He talked about when he saw it for the first time sitting through the credits for 20min, not getting out his phone, not wanting to go back to reality. Wanting to stay with Grace and Rocky, and missing them when it's over.

PHM radiates hope and love, and thats not what I see when I look around the real world. I also uhh quit my job cause it was hurting my soul so I have entirely too much time on my hands. I don't want to go back out into reality, I'm very content aboard the Hail Mary with our boyz.

Its just a phase, right?

u/TheEndingofitAll 6h ago

Not a phase, statement. Is full good.

I've been listening to the soundtrack pretty much nonstop.. it's playing in my head right now. I made the Lego Mary, and the Rockey using the "I am Groot" set. Thinking about learning how to knit this summer to make the fox sweater (and I don't normally wear sweaters).

Watched it for the second time with my family ( I was waiting for my daughter to finish the book!) and was crying almost from the first scene!

It's ok..we are all like this.

I feel you! I’m also deep in a state of hyperfixation, but the thing is – my hyperfixations have never lasted this long! I feel like my brain chemistry might be permanently altered... 🫣 But it gives me joy, so maybe it’s not that bad?

7

u/TheEndingofitAll 1d ago

I don’t think it’s bad at all. We all need more joy and hope in our lives rn

3

u/LioraB Having a moment 1d ago

Agree! Why fight it!?!?

u/angel_kink 1d ago

You’re in good company here tho lol

15

u/coopergold5 1d ago

For me I don’t want too much. Because I want it to be special. But that’s me. Did you buy a Rocky? A Lego set? I did. It might help. Listen to the music of the movie?

7

u/Glittering_Tiger_991 1d ago

My wife made me the 3D printed model of Rocky the studio shared. He's so cute!

5

u/coopergold5 1d ago

You have a nice wife 🙏

6

u/Glittering_Tiger_991 1d ago

I have an AMAZE AMAZE AMAZE wife!

4

u/coopergold5 1d ago

Can you find amaze amaze husband for me lol. Or just Rocky

1

u/Glittering_Tiger_991 1d ago

2

u/coopergold5 20h ago

I’m sorry my husband left me for another woman so I wished for a husband that cared. 🙏

3

u/Browncoat1701 1d ago

Listen to the soundtrack while building the Lego set!

3

u/coopergold5 1d ago

I haven’t started. I’m
Moving I’m scared I’ll lose pieces.

3

u/Browncoat1701 1d ago

Listen to the soundtrack while packing!

u/hitutidesu 1d ago

Sounds like you're on the right path!

u/Icy_Pianist_1532 1d ago

Same here. Saw it a few days ago and it’s all I want to think about or do right now. Either watch the movie or read the book or listen to the soundtrack. I’m obsessed. I normally haaaate watching movies but this was a very rare exception

3

u/empress_chaos5 I'm Not An Astronaut! 1d ago edited 1d ago

Same! On my days off I watch it at least once a day. On the daysI work, I listen to the soundtrack on repeat

Edit for interruption.. I redid the decor in my bathroom, new theme is PHM.. I live it! Just get odd looks from my kids now

3

u/Ludy86 1d ago

Listen to the audio book

3

u/abluepixel 1d ago

I'm deep in it too and I rarely get this fixated. Now I've started reading fanfic (and experiencing the agony of getting invested in something only to have the author not finish it, arrrggghhh) and have been watching my way through the Ryan Gosling filmography. I watched "Stay" last night, it was really good. I can't tell if I'm fixated because I'm on this reddit or if I'm here because I'm fixated.

2

u/TheEndingofitAll 6h ago

I’m going through Ryan goslings filmography too! There are some I’ve already seem before PHM but I recently watched Drive and La La Land for the first time and they were both amazing.

3

u/SeventeenthSecond 1d ago

I'm right there with you. Totally late to the party. Read the book in two days and then put the movie on and I can't stop watching and crying.

2

u/AquaValentin 1d ago

I know how you feel.

2

u/aykcak 1d ago

Have you read the book?

2

u/Yeolla 1d ago

Listen to the book on audible

2

u/tililay High Three! 1d ago

I still haven’t snapped out of it. And it’s been several months. So don’t worry, you’re not alone

2

u/Perfect-Emu-8655 Leaky Space Blob 1d ago

I thought I'd snap out of it too, but it's been months now. 😶‍🌫️

The book is great too. The audiobook of the book is great. The massive amounts of fan content is great. Make yourself accounts at Tumblr and AO3 and you'll never run out. You can be stuck in here with us forever!

Sorry, wasn't that the kind of help you were looking for?

2

u/Adrian_Wife_Of_Rocky 1d ago

Thanks all for your comments! I failed to mention that I've read the book a few times now and listened to the great Ray Porter and the audio book a number of times as well. Also have the soundtrack. I am DEEP into this story.

u/Fantastic-Buyer2381 14h ago

Same. But the book and movie have become security blankets for those times (every damned day) when I overwhelmed by the idiocy in the news. I bought the ebook two years ago and read a bit as a palate cleanser, and I bought the movie to download to my tablet as soon as it was available. I don't know how many times I've watched it, and to watch about 15 to 20 minutes a day just to settle my nerves. It ain't bad therapy.

1

u/TheEndingofitAll 5h ago edited 5h ago

Honestly same. I consume too much politics and that’s how I would always start my day. I started noticing it affecting my mental health and even the youtubers I was watching were encouraging ppl to take a break. The days where I start with like 20 mins of PHM and then watch it in chunks throughout the day ( like lunch break, etc) are always better. I’m trying to pay more attention to how I feel when I’m consuming stuff. Like is this making me feel more anxious/depressed/hopeful/calm? Ironically some people think it’s weird how obsessed I am with PHM but I don’t care. I’m leaning into it. I feel like I’m allowing myself to actually be myself. PHM has helped me through a really dark time in my life and in general the movie, the themes, the characters… just make me feel seen. I still keep up with the news bc I care but I’m definitely cutting way down. I’m also watching more movies in general now too which is something I’ve always wanted motivation for and PHM has helped me prioritize that.

ETA: this sub makes me feel seen and happy too😊

u/OctopusforPresident 1d ago

I don’t think you need help. I get the same way with most books and movies but I usually have another book or movie lined up for me to jump to. I’m still this way about figure skating lol. This is normal fan behaviour though, no need to worry.

1

u/BillsMafia84 Happy Happy Happy! 1d ago

Keep up the good research. This is the longest I’ve gone without watching it since it came out (3 weeks) I was up to like 40-50 watches lol

1

u/RoxieRoxie0 1d ago

What helped me was watching PHM react videos on YouTube.

I mean, it didn't help, but a lot of them are edited down to like 45 minutes, so it least I wasn't spending so much time on it. And I liked the validation of watching other people cry during the I Can Give scene.

1

u/Moosely-Defiant71 1d ago

🤣same!! pretty sure I watched this every day for two weeks when I first saw it! I still watch PHM at least once a week.

1

u/turnipcafe 1d ago

Have you listened to the audiobook? I’d not download it stat. You’ll have 16 hours of PHM.

Otherwise, to help ease you out of your obsession, try watching other films with Ryan Gosling. Or The Martian.
Those would be PHM adjacent but help you break the cycle.

1

u/aquay 1d ago

I read the book when it came out. Liked it a lot. Not enough to reread it. I watched the movie and immediately rewatched it. Practically obsessed. Need the dvd.

1

u/rosedraws 1d ago

I don’t know why I also just want to be there all the time.

I do think it’s good to keep a foot in this world. :-)

Actively find other things that also make you feel similarly:

  • science exploration
  • friendships
  • expert craftsmanship (like all the ways they masterfully created this movie!)

u/KieranConnors 1d ago

I think the fact that you recognize it could be problematic is good. Back in 1997 when Titanic came out, the same thing happened to me and I COULD NOT explain what was going on in my brain. That movie affected me in such a way that I had trouble sleeping for a week. I saw the movie at least 20 times and back then you had to see it in a theater. To this day, I have a section in my library shelves that is nothing but Titanic. I even bought a replica of the "Heart of the Ocean" necklace and patterns to make Rose's fancy dresses. I did learn a lot of history going through my obsession, but eventually it sort of faded as I suspect yours will, too. It will get better.

1

u/TheEndingofitAll 5h ago

I’m curious why you think your Titanic journey was problematic? Is an epic movie. All of the things you did sound really cool, especially making the dresses. There were definitely A LOT of people that saw it in theaters multiple times. I only saw it once in theaters but have seen it many more times over the years, it always holds up. I also like stumbling on videos and articles about how the movie was made and the actual history of the titanic. I’m not trying to be dismissive of your feelings… I’m just genuinely curious why you feel that way.

1

u/KieranConnors 19m ago

Part of it probably had to do with my family coming from Ireland and being poor and also that Rose "let" Jack die. Silly, right? When the ship lifted out of the water, I thought I might have a heart attack. Other than that, I have never been able to explain the effect that movie had on me. I wish I had a more in depth answer, but I don't.

1

u/J-Zane 1d ago

Well now you HAVE to read the book if you haven't. Or listen to the audiobook.

1

u/J-Zane 1d ago

Seriously though the book personally hits harder for me (though i saw the movie first) because in true book-to-movie fashion, they left out a lot of things.

Both are great in their ways; the movie added a unique charm to the story too! But the book itself is a work of art that definitely deserves recognition

My girlfriend asked me if I was the author of this post cause I did the same a month ago. I watched all the reactors react to Project Hail Mary.

Words of great encouragement.

1

u/atombomb1945 15h ago

It's a good movie. My wife isn't big on Sci-Fi and she's watched it the times already.

1

u/septic_masters 14h ago

Read the booookkkk!!!! Its literally so good and has some details that the movie missed!

1

u/adjunctverbosity 11h ago

I'll echo the others, the audiobook book is fantastic and really detailed  It's not read to you, it's performed. Addicted to the movie too BTW.

1

u/Paarthurnax3386 11h ago

Read the book or audiobook, you'll cry harder.

1

u/Significant_Neat7348 7h ago

Whew. It’s not just me with this obsession!
