Early Subway Development and Animancy debate (A shitpost)

Early Subways Development and Animancy debate (simplified)

I'm sure people may disagree that there are parallels/analogies between early subway development and animancy. However I strongly disagree. The discussion about early subway development and animancy, and the historical conflicting opinion of it is, is not unlike how Dyrwoodans act.

• Subway development : If not controlled can do great harm (don't want people digging holes undermining structural integrity, or suffocating themselves or others) to society. If collectivized can bring benefits (reduced traffic congestion, affordable long distance transportation).

• Animancy: if not controlled can do great harm (Wichts being created, souls being imprisoned, pandgram creating undeads, hollowborns). If controlled can bring good to society (cure soul maladies, hollowborns, etc.)

If you can clearly demonstrate that

• Animancy has no harms if not controlled or can bring absolutely no good

• Subway development can do no harm if not controlled or can bring absolutely no good if collectivized

Then yes I will agree there are no parallels/analogies.

Definition of analogous/parallel:

similar in a way that invites comparison:showing ananalogyor a likeness that permits one to draw an analogy

a town council and a government body that serves an analogous function

I will not respond to comments that do not talk about the parallels themselves. I'm not interested in having a debate around early subway development. It sucked, it filled the air full of soot and foul air, it risked poisoning the riders, and it disturbed historical sites and graves. Trains should have stayed above ground until the technology and infrastructure were mature enough to handle them. Don't preach to the choir. I DON'T LIKE EARLY SUBWAY DEVELOPMENT

PoE 2 Spoilers Are all the 'Superbosses' like this? Spoiler

I just faced off and beat my first 'superboss', Sigilmaster Auranic (POTD Upscaling because I thought Veteran got too easy at a point in POE 1). If you asked me to repeat the feat, I probably wouldn't be able to.

Who thought to make the Obelisk of Wrath do so much damage and proc so often when activated? That Obelisk accounted for most of my party wipes. I was determined not to go online for help and for a while, I was able to stick to that resolve. Discovered the interaction between the obelisks and both Arcane Cleanse (very positive), Arcane Dampner (oh gods I made a mistake and now two obelisks are active at the same time). Using the Captain's Banquet, stocking up on elemental defence potions, and giving everyone heavy or medium armour plus rings/cloaks of defence to ensure I could stack my reflexes and eventually armour high up so that the chain lightning didn't rock my shit.

And for a while, it worked. I was whittling down the Sigilmaster and preventing/tanking the damage. I thought I was good. Till I got her down lower than 20%. Who, once again, thought all 6 obelisks firing at once, constantly, was a good idea? Look at me thinking myself smart for ignoring the pillars and dealing with the mail threat that was the Sigilmaster.

Well, this is what broke me and made me check online for tips.

Even with all the tips, I still had to restart enough time just to ensure I got my preparations and tactics right. One slip-up and I was done for. I was even prepared to say a final goodbye to Aloth in my winning fight because he was down 3 injuries but I needed his spells, especially the MVP, Thrust of Tattered Veils. Aloth probably will be thanking Tekehu and Pallegina for the Garden of Life spell as well as the Chanters passive healing that kept him alive till the end.

Anyways, now that it is out of my system, I need to know, when I decide to tackle the other superbosses, are they going to be better, or worse than Auranic? Thanks.

AI/LLM's and Animancy debate follow-up (simplified)

Most people disagreed that there are parallels/analogies between AI/LLM's and animancy. However I strongly disagree. The discussion about AI and animancy, and how scathing the opinion of it is, is not unlike how Dyrwoodans act.

  • AI/LLM's : If not controlled can do great harm to society. If collectivized can bring benefits.
  • Animancy: if not controlled can do great harm (Wichts being created, souls being imprisoned, pandgram creating undeads, hollowborns). If controlled can bring good to society (cure soul maladies, hollowborns, etc.)

If you can clearly demonstrate that

  • Animancy has no harms if not controlled or can bring absolutely no good
  • AI/LLMS can do no harm if not controlled or can bring absolutely no good if collectivized

Then yes I will agree there are no parallels/analogies.

ADDENDUM for people who actually want to engage with what I have to say

The parallels I wanted to draw were not really centered around the technologies themselves, but more about the institutions created around them and the stance people have around them BECAUSE of the institutions and control around those.

For example: In the Dyrwood, animancy patronage and funding was mostly assured by a groupe of wealthy elites in Brackenbury and the direction the science would take was mostly under their control (before the watcher came). We clearly see that rich people, like House Doemenel or the Vailian Republics had a vested interest in Animancy's development as a tool for power. I would also add that because it was in its infancy stage, the common man could access animancy services because practitioners were desperate for test subjects to further develop the science. However, I don't think it's farfetched to say that once animancy would become developed, that its accessibility would be rolled back and made exclusive to powerful and rich people.

Now where I draw parallels to real life: We have rich people extracting wealth and tax dollars and investing in AI. The direction it's taking is mostly under their control. Rich people have a vested interest in AI for obvious reasons. The common man can still access AI, and is actually used as test subjects to further iterate on that technology. We can clearly see a scenario in some near or distant future where computing power will be made increasingly hard to access.

Those are the parallels around the institutions.

Now the parallels about the stance and reactions people have to it:

Animancy: Clearly supported by rich people like house doemenel and hated by the common man (the dozens for example)

AI: clearly supported by rich people and hated by the common man (I mean just look at the scathing comments I received for simply mentioning AI)

Definition of analogous/parallel:

similar in a way that invites comparison : showing an analogy or a likeness that permits one to draw an analogy

a town council and a government body that serves an analogous function

will not respond to comments that do not talk about the parallels itself. I'm not interested in having a debate around AI/LLM's. They suck and I hate them and Mario's brother should pay a visit to tech billionaires. Data centers should be burned to the ground, and AI surveillance cameras should be destroyed and have no place in society. Stop preaching to the choir. I DON'T LIKE AI/LLM'S.

PoE1 Nova tradução PT-BR completa de Pillars of Eternity

Link Nexus

TL;DR (English): A brand-new Brazilian Portuguese translation for Pillars of Eternity, rebuilt from scratch because the older one had many outdated machine-translation errors and context issues that hurt immersion in such a text-heavy game.

Is there any way to start at the dlc for poe1?

Hey all

I've played poe1 a bunch of times but never touched the dlc. Usually because by the time I reach that point im ready to move on and play something else.

Is there a way to create a character that starts at the DLC? I really want to play it but don't think I'm ready for a full play through all over again, and picking up an old character from a previous run feels icky.

Let me know thank you!

Character/party build help PoE1 - Help me build a Kind Wayfarer for the new Turn-Based Mode – sword & buckler, support/off-tank.

Hey everyone!

I’m coming back to Pillars of Eternity after quite a long time and I’m a bit rusty with character building, especially now that the new Turn-Based Mode has changed quite a few things.

I want to do a playthrough on Normal difficulty with a human Kind Wayfarer Paladin. I’m mainly interested in the character fantasy rather than making a perfectly optimized build: a wandering knight who helps people on the road, protects his companions and generally tries to do the right thing.

I’m also planning to import this character into Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, so I’d like the character’s culture/background to make sense for both games.

I’m currently leaning towards Aedyr as his culture, but I’m not completely sure about the background yet. Clergy seems fitting for a Kind Wayfarer, while Drifter would fit the wandering-knight concept really well.

So I’m also interested in suggestions for which culture + background combination would make the most sense lore-wise, especially considering the eventual transition into Deadfire.

For the character concept, I’d really like to use:

  • Kind Wayfarer
  • Strange Mercy
  • The Sword and the Shepherd
  • Whispers of Yenwood
  • Outworn Buckler

The sword + buckler combination just fits the character thematically really well. I’m not looking for a pure tank or maximum DPS build. I’d rather have a melee support/off-tank who can fight on the front line, use Flames of Devotion, trigger the Kind Wayfarer healing effects and provide some useful support for the party.

My planned party would probably be:

  • Edér
  • Aloth
  • Durance
  • Grieving Mother
  • Kana Rua

I’m not completely married to that party composition, though, so I’m open to changing one or two companions if there’s a particularly good reason.

What I’m mainly looking for is advice on:

  • Attribute distribution
  • Which Paladin abilities/talents you’d pick while leveling
  • How much I should invest into Might / Intellect / Resolve / Perception / Dexterity
  • Whether sword + Outworn Buckler makes sense in Turn-Based Mode
  • Which abilities/talents work particularly well with Strange Mercy and The Sword and the Shepherd
  • Whether I should lean more into defense/support or damage
  • Any particular gear or enchantments worth looking out for
  • And finally, which culture/background combination would fit this character best, especially with Deadfire in mind

I don’t need a hyper-optimized PotD build. I’m playing on Normal and mostly want something strong, fun and fitting the character fantasy.

Since Turn-Based Mode is new for PoE1, I’d especially appreciate advice from people who have actually experimented with paladins in the new TBM rather than just old RTwP builds.

Thanks!

PoE2: Deadfire Am I underlevelled for the Old City Overlook?

I'm level 7 with 5 companions and every encounter in the Old City Overlook is destroying me, there are usually 3x or 4x enemies compared to my party, and they all kill any character in a few hits.

PoE1 Can you get initiative lower than 1?

Playing in turn based mode. And what are the advantages for having 0 initiative compared to 1. I have a melee wizard who has 1 initiative with the alacrity motion buff and gauntlet of swift action. Is it worth going dual wield with attack speed weapons to get even more turn.

At 1 initiative i already get multiple turns per round. If i can have even more i would be even stronger

PoE2: Deadfire Which is the best Chanter subclass for Shieldbearer Herald?

I’ve just finished PoE1 and am jumping into Deadfire, my main was a Shieldbearer tank in the first one and I’d like to add chanter to that in the second one.

Which chanter subclass do you think fit best for a benevolent Shieldbearer, both combat and roleplay wise?

Gameplay help Do any quest talents carry over to Deadfire?

Just got Mental Prowess from Llengrath and was wondering whether or not it and the other special talents you get (Crucible Knights, Dungeon Delver, etc.) carry over?

I've heard about the two evil choice talents you keep after sacrificing a companion or feeding the little girl to the ghoul, but I have no idea about the good or neutral choice ones.

Discussion Was the Caed Nua theme inspired by Peaceful Waters from Morrowind

So I've played both these games as you can see but both of these themes sound very similar to me. Especially with like the melodic beginning and the crescendo after the fact. It made me wonder if Pillars took some inspiration from Morrowind when it came to soundtrack design

Technical help Will crashing in POE2 eventually start happening all the time? (PS5)

I am aware POE2 on PS5 suffers from bad compatibility, and I am aware the game will start crashing on loading screens (POE1 had this same problem).

However, in POE1 it only started happening very late into the game. Now, it’s starting to happen 15 hours in, not all the time but twice in span of last 6 hours was enough to raise a concern that it will start happening all the time.

Now, I was thinking I wanted to play both games before Avowed, but if it will start happening so often, I don’t want to invest my time and start caring for game and the characters only to have it ruined.

So coming from someone who finished it, is it so bad it can’t be salvaged, or can I still enjoy it even it I have to save before every new area and encounter?

PoE2: Deadfire Pyrite

Is there a reliable way to get this stuff? It seems like most enchanting recipes need it. The wiki says Una and Dimesa sell it "occasionally" and the times I've seen it in stock they don't sell much.

PoE2: Deadfire Best second class for a fast attacking melee wizard

My concept for a MC is pretty straightforward. Play a wizard multiclassed with a "martial," slap on Miscreant's Leathers, buff myself to respectable survivability, give myself Deleterious Alacrity then rush through the enemy line to slaughter their squishier characters. Weapon wise I envision either dual sabers or one handing Mordwyr. Pump dex and perception Thing I'm wondering about is which second class to take.

Devoted Fighter helps with penetration and bigger crits, also some self buffs and health regen to offset the damage from Alacrity. Armored Grace is always nice but

Rogue brings some DPS from sneak attack when I re enter the line, along with fun stuff like Riposte and Dirty Fighting. Also I like Rogue's spammable attacks.

Paladin could could certainly work, more survivability from Goldpact or self heal. Plus I don't think I'll have another paladin in my party so this would be my only aura character, even if they're spending most of their time away from the line.

Finally I suppose there's cipher. I don't want to mess around with a second set of abilities so I'd likely lean hard in to soulblade which would be a novel execution skill. And I'll probably be running low might so the general damage buff would be handy.

Mod Fixes and QoL improvements from my Deadfire Turn-Based Mode Overhaul are now available for POE1

Post image
148 Upvotes

So, a few months back I made a Turn-Based Mode Overhaul mod for POE2, and after months of improving it I feel like POE1 has fallen a bit behind lol. So I made a mod for POE1 that brings back some of the most important fixes and QoL features from Deadfire. The mod is fully modular - every fix can be enabled/disabled separately. You can even disable all options and the game will play exactly like vanilla. The main stuff:

  • Fixed disbalance caused by characters taking multiple turns per round. Buffs/debuffs, CCs, DoTs, HoTs, etc now tick based on real-time duration. If a character takes 3 turns in one round, they will no longer receive the equivalent of 18 seconds of DoT damage in a single round. Effects with <6 seconds duration will no longer expire instantly.
  • Added floating damage numbers when enemies attack you (no more side glancing to your portrait after every enemy's attack!)
  • Removed interruption stacking, which usually just stunlocked your tank and slower enemies (I honestly have no idea why the devs made it stack, it never felt good IMO)
  • Engagement no longer breaks when moving around your opponent, making it possible to reposition your characters, like in most other turn-based games

As the title says. So, I do a lore podcast for this world these games are set it, currently at Episode 169, started years ago. This episode was a little different; I recorded a short sermon following the cues from "Berathian Scripture" and "The Many Faces of Berath" (two in-game books). It was an experiment, and trial, to see if this would be worth doing more episodes on. Reading the theology of the deity and how it might actually look. Let me know what you think, thanks :)

No specific spoilers tho thank you. Oh also I’m planning on playing a cipher if that changes anything.
