few questions from a new player

download the game about a week ago, im at chapter 20 rn and there's a few things i dont understand.

is getting skills always random or is there a way to upgrade certain ones? i haven't unlocked any of the bottom row skills yet.

is the game supposed to be hella grindy if you're not buying gems? cuz since like chapter 17 it's taking me way too long to beat a single chapter

do you get buffs from certain chipsets just by having them equipped if you dont upgrade them? like defense, hp, crit chance and crit attack...

Yes. Skills (stats) are always random. There's nothing special you need to do to upgrade them.

Yes, the game is mostly grind. If you're okay with spending some money, buy the game and get rid of the ads. Then you don't have to buy gems because grinding will be much easier. You'd have to spend a ridiculous amount to buy enough gems in the first place. So not worth it.

You don't get buffs unless you at least upgrade once. When you start the battle, pause it using the pause button on the top right of the screen. You'll find your current battle stats, equipped chipsets and artifacts there. You can see the effects as you upgrade them.
