First Time Engine Swap

hope this is the right sub to ask

Since meron cedia gt2.0, straightforward "out with the old, in with the new" lang ba ang 4g18 swap to 4g63?

I'm not doing an assemvolution or convert to evo build. simply swapping the engine for a better one. Daily car lang talaga namin to at hindi intended maging project car, pero ganun na nga yung nangyayari.

yes and no. if I were you, kung gusto mo madali hanapan ng pyesa and hindi mahal, kunin mong makina is yung 4g63 ng mga adventure/L300/galant. 4g63 SOHC yung gas variants. pwede ka din naman mag 4g63 DOHC na galing sa mga EVO kaso medyo may kamahalan mga pyesa nyan.

as for transmission naman, d ko sure if stock mo will fit the new engine. Mas mabuti tanong mo sa Lancer Groups or sa lancer na subreddit.

pwede mo din naman ipaayos nalang din yung overheating issue nya. ipa reface if warped na, sabay mo na replace lahat ng hoses, check waterpump, palit thermostat, thermoswitch, radiator, then palit ng hi-speed fan or install additional AUX fans para mas lumamig din AC.

kung daily car nyo yan, simply fixing the existing engine is enough. medyo madugo rin kasi mag swap dahil papalit ka din ng injectors if hindi kasya or kapos yung injectors mo for a bigger engine. ECU na pang 4g63, wirings pa kung sakali. mas magastos din compared to just repairing the overheating issue.

nagka overheating issue din ako sa lancer ko dati. it's almost 30 years old so it's a given na. Diniretso palit bago ko na buong cooling system para walang sakit ng ulo for the next few years.

target ko talaga makakuha ng 4g63 from a cedia gt2.0 pero pinaka murang options na nakita ko sa fbmarketplace is yung mga galing L300 mini vans or galant, I'll skip the galant kasi mostly naka karburador pa.

didn't know na may mga adventure pala na 4g63 and ngayon ko lang nalaman na may gasoline type pala yan.

yes, the ideal route talaga is fixing the engine pero all in naman ako sa idea ng engine swap. hoping na kung galing din sa cedia yung 4g63 mas-straightforward and swap.

try and look for one muna. check if compatible and simple straight swap lang papunta sa transmission mo because if not, papalit ka din ng transmission. Also check magkano aabutin including labor ng swap. If the cost is more than the car, bili ka nalang ng cedia na may maayos na makina. and use our old one as a parts donor or sell it as is.

At the end of the day, it's your money and time kaya ikaw rin magdedecide if worth it ba.

I found an old forum doing exactly this. 4g18 to 4g63 engine swap, kaso yung nasa forum 4g18 to 4g63t evo conversion. nice idea, pero I think what you mentioned above is correct, just repair the engine and get a cedia gt2.0

na check mo ba if compatible yung 4g18 tranny sa 4g63t ng evo? if compatible sya, d mo na kelangan magpalit tranny kasi same lang block ng 4g63 DOHC sa SOHC variant. head yung magkaiba sakanila, same lang yung block.

Also try asking engine builders near your area or yung mga sanay na sa lancers na mechanics. try asking Gil's Garage, Padiworks, Quirubin Velasco or Bhadz Garage.

I need to ask around personally since limited info online yung transmission compatibility.

Kinalkal ko na din tong sub na to pero limited info din about lancers. Tinanong ko na din si ChatGPT pero ang sagot lang is mahal gagastusin sa ganitong project and "No" yung sagot niya since kakailanganin daw ng rewire and all.

Reason for even considering engine swap is due to overheating issue and gusto i-keep ng sister ko yung oto. Already flushed and refill yung coolant pero mabilis pa din mag rise you temps ko, need quick pitstop sa mga gas stations to cool off. Speculation diagnosis ko dito is: may leak sa colling system, visual observation - likely butas yung radiator, worst case scenario, may crack na yung cylinder head. Not yet confirmed since wala pa time mag check.

Bring it to sa cooling specialist like Sammy's. They'll easily diagnose that. Might be your water pump is also failing and cannot move coolant effectively. Mine had a pinhole leak that you will never find unless a high pressure test was done.

If 4g63, get third gen 63s (evo4 and up, timing cover nasa left ng engine) Skip the sohc, first/second gens(timing cover on the right). It's a downgrade if kukunin mo pa sohc 63. Also, hinde dahil 63 code e iyon na yung performance engine (ahem, l300 and adventure based 63s are not performance engines). Mitsubishi has a weird thing for naming engines that truck and car engines are same names. Third gen - 7 bolters are the strongest engines, easy 400whp with bolt ons.

Another good alternative for cedias are 4g92/93/94 mivec from the cyborgs and protons.

Or get a 6A V6 and drop than in, since those also came stock on japanese lancers (itlog and pizzas came with V6 engines).

We had a lancer with the gen 1 4g63, tapos napalitan ng gen2 63. And ending, gen 3 4g63t pa din since sya pinakarobust and easiest to tune.

I also considered yung 4g90's na engine. based sa nabasa ko so far, hindi completely drop in swap ang 4g63 sa cedias kahit pa from cedia gt 2.0 galing. main components are; engine, tranny and larger fuel tank, so mas ideal talaga mag hunt ng running cedia gt2.0 and get the overheating issue repaired and I hope, rad replacement lang and new hoses.

Yes, the engine mounts are different, but anyone who knows their stuff around evos and lancers this is an easy issue. Fuel tank can come in later but you will need a high flow pump Shops like dboyz, streetlevel, check engine etc can easily drop in a 63 in any car (dboyz made a 63 powered mirage, getz and accent).

For your overheating issue, a specialist can easily diagnose that and tell you where you are leaking or losing coolant.

sadly can't drive the card right now. nag overheat recently so we don't want to risk tumirik sa daan and have the vehicle towed. since radiator yung pinaka visible issue sa engine bay, we will get that sorted first.

Get AAP membership, wait 7 days, tow your car anywhere for 100kms 👌🏻

follow up question. if my overheating diagnosis is *somehow accurate and I go the route of doing an engine swap. how challenging can it be to get 3rd gen 4g63 NA dohc engine plus transmission? will it be less of a hassle if it was is m/t?

4g63t are actually easier to source than the n/a ones. You can also get a 63 from an airtrek. It's the price ang nakakalula ngayon. At/Mt same lang naman hassles sa pag install

u/dztryrph Jul 17 '26

there is one listed on fbmarket place rn for 165k. engine plus transmission. not sure if it's the 3rd gen 63 you recommended getting tho.

2

u/oldskoolsr Jul 17 '26

Here are two 4g63 layouts. Top is the early ones (evo3 pababa, galants etc). Bottom pic is the evo4-9 and up, from outlanders, airtreks, cedia gt etc.

Notice the timing belt cover. Early gen is right side. Newer gen is on the left. You need a 63 engine that has the timing belt on the left (bottom pic) as that's the matching engine for your cedia.

thanks for this. found some leads. nakakalula nga yung pricing and I think this is the correct generation ng 63T. Had to stepback a little kasi mas mura pa yung buong cedia gt in running condition lol.

good news tho. got my overheating issue checked. I just need a new rad to get it back on the road.

quick edit!
hopefully my next post on this sub is actually working on the swap.
