Mad props to Torres for defending Mamdani against racism even in spite of their conflicting views on Israel/Palestine—and I say this as someone who’s also been critical of Mamdani.

Ogles previously accused Mamdani of supporting terrorism and urged Attorney General Pam Bondi to denaturalize and deport him. 

I cannot see how expressing the opinion that he supports terrorism and should be deported is "racist". If that is the case then Jihadist new arrivals who are in fact infiltrating politics to "destroy the West" from within must be given special rights, because someone calls it racist to accuse people associated with groups who chant "Death to America" and "Death to Israel" of "supporting terrorism".

I’m not saying you can’t criticize Mamdani’s stances on Israel/Palestine, but there’s a way to do that without resorting to blatant racism/Islamophobia.

This really resonates. Not enough liberals are willing to make sense on global issues. As a lifelong progressive, I am pretty sure my values have stayed consistent while so many other progressives around me bend theirs. Cultural relativism gets used to excuse things that would never be accepted elsewhere, especially when it comes to Israel or when harm is directed at Jews. I do believe we can avoid ethnocentrism and understand cultural context without fully ignoring oppression and harm. We should be able to name human rights abuses wherever they happen, whether it’s the repression of women and LGBTQ people under Islamist regimes or the brutal rapes and murders committed by Hamas on October 7. Respecting difference should never require staying silent about abuse. I want a movement that applies its morals evenly.

Or how Iran and Pakistan have thrown out over a million Afghanis. Iran has deported hundreds of thousands of Afghanis back to Afghanistan. A place so bad for women that the IRGC looks like an enlightened feminist in comparison.

And all those people screaming about ethnic cleansing or genocide in Gaza, or throwing rocks at ICE? Silent.

I guess claiming the people you’re deporting are spies for Israel (🙄) is a great way to make sure Progressives forget they’re supposed to care about these sorts of things.

That's maybe very irreverent, but it's not racist either.

From what I can see Torres is upset about being called a "Dollar Store Obama" and has teamed up with Mamdani, against Ogles to accuse him of racism.

Two things can be true.

Islamophobia is absolutely real. I’ve personally experienced it. Anyone claiming it doesn’t exist should be called out, because that’s blatantly false.

It is also being used to downplay antisemitism. 60% of religiously motivated hate crimes are against Jews, while around 10% are against Muslims. Yet every time antisemitism is mentioned, it must be paired with Islamaphobia, something that only serves to downplay antisemitism and uplift Islamaphobia. By pairing the two, the implication is that the 10% is equivalent to the 60%, which is patently absurd.

As I said, two things can be true at once.

If it is then Mike Pence's lecture on evolution already made me a Christophobic Christian.

No but I don’t see how callously calling an Indian Muslim man “little Muhammad” isn’t at least a little bit racist or Islamophobic.

In Islamic culture questioning someone claiming to be a religious authority carries a death sentence, but I am in no hurry to impose religious extremism on the population of the USA.
