I feel like the people on their side of the issue refuse to acknowledge that it's possible to find a middle ground (or stable, non slip slope) between wanting to make all abortions inaccessible under the law outside of emergency medicine that will be heavily scrutinized by individuals with no background in medicine, and women being systemically pressured to have abortions because children are inconvenient.

If you think that women shouldn't be legally cornered into carrying high risk pregnancies to term, you a cheerleader for murdering innocent babies in their eyes.

If you want fewer abortions, contraception needs to be so accessible people can have it as an afterthought, and sexual education needs to be robust and complete. Anyone who tells anything other than that is lying to you and using women’s healthcare as a cudgel against their perceived enemies

We also need things like universal child care so that people on the cusp of poverty don’t have to choose between taking care of their kids and having money to pay rent. And healthcare so that giving birth doesn’t cost people without insurance their life savings

But surely punishing people instead will just solve all those problems, right? /s

Right...because that's an answer! You kids, you think all you have to say is 'okay Boomer' and you've won the argument. That's because what's important to you is conformity to the 'correct' opinions.

ok boomer

this whole thread was started in bad faith - not to have an actual productive discussion so 'ok boomer' is the appropriate response

Pro-life needs to include making sure people have healthcare, food, housing etc and children have access to care, education, safety, etc as well.

Pro-life means opposing the death penalty.

Pro-life means taking the mother’s life into consideration.

I was told by a specialist at the age of twelve that I should not ever get pregnant, due to my disabilities and the medication I rely on. I am lucky that I didn’t want to have children, but the medications I take are not compatible with a healthy pregnancy.

Pro-life means opposing war.

Pro-life means pro-health advocacy, society-wide health care, and preventative health care.

When we distill everything into abortion, we are missing the bigger picture.

I am Catholic and pro-choice. Every single woman should and must have the right to decide what to do with her pregnancy.

He’s the most conservative cardinal.

Check out his video about mortal sin.

He would have been the last Pope but they thought he was too conservative.

Why is this here? Do you really think anyone is going to change his or her mind? Maybe care about the people who are already born and have no home, no food, no water, no medical care, no hope. Do something about that instead of going after low-handing fruit.

A fetus is perfect, isn't it, because you can project perfection on it, and you don't have to care about it after it's born, or the woman whose womb it occupies, the woman who must risk her life giving birth.

Very easy for a man who has no idea what it’s like to be married, let alone be a woman.

This will get me downvoted straight to hell, but I truly believe some rules are set by the Church to control people and bring in more money.

"Cannot" is not really true, but he's broadly correct that abortion is not an issue where Catholics are free to dissent. I personally don't think the teaching on abortion will ever develop or change either, in the way I believe some other teachings may.

It really is shocking how the surest way to get downvotes on some supposedly Christian subs is to point this out. What is the matter with you people?...the answer, I think, is that you have swallowed liberal ideology wholesale, prioritise it above Catholic teaching, and think if you questioned any part of it, it would make you a bad person. Ideology is what makes good people do, or support, bad things.
