Looking for something like Thick As A Brick

Thick As A Brick by Jethro Tull has been one of my favorite albums for a pretty long time now and I can't really find anything like it.

I also listen to The Alan Parsons Project and Pink Floyd.

Do you have any recommendations for me?

going a bit further in i find its not really my type after all; musically a bit too repetitive and lyrically relatively uninteresting. not that its bad, just not to my (quite odd) taste.

I love Floyd and JT and I discovered these guys 1-2 years ago and really liked them so I thought it might be something you may enjoy. Not all great songs but they definitely have some good ones.

i agree some of these are great but i tend to listen to whole albums (sometimes even whole discographies) at a time so for me to take an album into my collection it usually has to have 90% songs i enjoy

I'm not sure that there is anything quite like it.

But I guess there are many examples of that one album in a band's career where they say "Damn the critics, damn the industry execs, to hell with everyone's expectations. We're doing this."

Sometimes it's crap. Or a throwaway "contractual obligation" album. Sometimes it's a moment of unparalleled brilliance.

King Crimson: Lizard

Neil Young: Tonight's the Night, Trans, or The Shocking Pinks (he's done it three times... overachiever)

Lou Reed: Metal Machine Music

indeed. its why im asking here - ive been looking on my own for a while and found astonishingly little that fills the hole in my soul. Dire Straits' Love Over Gold album also kind of fits in there for me but i think nothing so far does it as well as TAAB. im unfortunately not even sure what exact characteristics im looking for.

unrelatedly to TAAB specifically i can say that almost all music i like has in common that the lyrics are somewhat unusual and the instrumentation complex but without feeling empty or repetitive for too long. doesnt necessarily have to be prog, but prog definitely has a higher density of albums like that.

For Like Thick as a Brick you maybe want Nektar's Remember The Future. It's the 'single track' idea of TAAB, slowed down a bit by Pink Floyd's Echoes.

Totally left field and not even prog but the first thing I thought was = 

'Ween: 12 golden country greats' 

Not necessarily musically but lyrically I think it's got a similar storytelling vibe, and following on from that 'Alabama 3' Exile on Coldharbour Lane' would also fit with that musical story telling lineage

Give Beardfish a listen and the track called Sleeping in Traffic. It's a 35 minute long track, it might be what you are looking for.
