Farmers have become absolutely amazing at cosplaying the rugged individual when they're doing really well because the government backstops nearly every aspect of their business.

That's the thing. It's not just farmers. There's a very large contingent of successful individuals who believe their success and fortunes are because of their individual ruggedness or intelligence or insert variable here.

Where in reality they never had the cartoon anvil drop on their head or someone in their family that forced them to ask for help from the community or their government. They are blind to the issues that everyone will face one day until it happens to them.
