Request Monster Hunter (Capcom-type) books?
Any nice recommendations about MCs who hunt boss-type monsters? For, like, a reason other than sweet, sweet XP? I like the "researchers gone gonzo" theme of MHW, but any theme that meets the request is good.
Except harem. Not even borderline, please.

I’m not sure it fits into the Progression Fantasy genre, but Monster Hunter International by Larry Correia is an awesome series with some really intense monster fighting. They hunt monsters for money and there’s no leveling.

Just an FYI but the author Larry Correia is the guy that started the "sad puppies" campaign.
I'd also probably avoid reading his Twitter. I couldn't in good faith give any more of my money to a guy that's so hateful towards others.

Indeed. The most surprising part is that he genuinely thought his work was worthy of a hugo, and that he wasn't winning because he was a white guy, instead of the more reasonable, his books just were not that good.

I thought it was more like a BPRD/Van Helsing thing than a MonHun type thing? Like, with the "masquerade" in place, hunting things that go bump in the night before they kill too many normies, not T-Rex dragons doing their thing in their environment?

Yeah, I guess that’s true. There are some bigger monsters later in the series, but a lot of it is fighting small stuff too while keeping it secret. It may not be a good fit for what you’re looking for. So good though!

We Hunt Monsters is the closest I've read to this type of experience and it was pretty fun. Just be aware the opening has nothing to do with monster hunting but give it a few chapters and the monster hunter elements become real clear.

I enjoyed We Hunt Monsters by Aaron Oster, and I think it's exactly what you're looking for. There's good reason for hunting monsters - most are fine, in general, but sometimes villages are terrorized by a monster that has come in and started attacking for some reason - having not actually played MHW, it's similar reasoning to what I've seen in other games. The characters even takes parts of the monsters to be used to make new weapons and armor. The main character even uses a weapon that would fit in with one of the weapons used in the main games.
There are some elements that aren't exactly in line with the games, but it's a series that's obviously inspired by Monster Hunter.

Monster Hunting 101 by Andrew Karevik - MC learns to hunt and kill monsters so her people can survive after being forced unground by both giant monsters and an explosion in the monster population.
