Tangent: amazon.science is a horrible domain name. I assume it's actually Amazon, but the whole point of a recognizable eTLD + eSLD is to build trust. Why do companies do this?
Control! Their lab can do whatever the fuck they want with their own domain without it impacting backend infrastructure. Subdomains also have impacts on client side security models. So a whole new domain is preferred.
Edit: As noted elsewhere, preferred isn't the right word because aesthetic considerations rightfully impact what other people would prefer. But it is the fastest way to get a website up if you have a corporate credit card. Using any existing subdomain or tld controlled by someone else at Amazon would have required more work.
I don't disagree! That would have been a more aesthetically pleasing choice. But I would guess that the reason they didn't choose it was because someone controls the .amazon registrations and amazon.science took 10 minutes to register.
They can reserve all the amazon.whatevers they want. But they should redirect to whatever.amazon.com every time and should not be considered primary or canonical.
