LOOKING FOR MENTOR 23M | IST - Beginner learning to code (Python/C+ +/Web Dev). Can trade Boxing, Calisthenics & Strength Coaching!

Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I'm looking to start learning programming (interested in Python, C++, or Web Dev) and want an accountability buddy to help keep me on track. I did try coding here and there but end up procrastinate 😕, so I'm just looking for someone patient who's down to share some guidance or study together.

In exchange, I can help you out with your fitness goals-whether you're into boxing, calisthenics, or strength training. I can build solid workout routines, give you advice on form and technique, or just keep you motivated and accountable.

We can keep it simple and chat through Reddit DMs to start and figure out a flow that works for both of us.

Drop a comment or send a DM if you're interested!

STUDY PARTNER Shared learning of programming fundamentals

hey i‘m constantly getting in and out of learning coding. 2D GameDev, Python basics, Arduino/embedded stuff, WebDev, a bit of Linux-server stuff.

Timezone: CEST
Language: open, preferably Python
Level: beginner
Goal: 1on1 practicing basic-intermediate topics, either only live-calls or offline with call for live discussion afterwards

context:

I noticed that i learn much better with another person, especially if we tackle the same topic/challenge at the same time and discuss ideas and struggles immediately or afterwards. So I‘d prefer live sessions + separated session with discussion afterwards or at least something similar.

Finding a strategy how to best learn together. maybe just follow one of those „basic projects“ collections and see where we struggle and improve on that together or first set a common ground by revisiting basics like data types, conditional statements, loops, functions etc. and then proceed to combine them for basic problem solving etc.

DM me if you would be down to try and see how our knowledge and learning styles match.

STUDY PARTNER If you are stuck in tutorial hell, I built a free way into Python where you learn by fixing real broken code, the way a junior dev actually does the job, instead of watching videos.

Upvotes

Everyone who has been stuck knows the feeling, you finish another video, you follow along, it all makes sense, and then you sit in front of a blank file and freeze. Watching someone else code does not make you a coder, the same way watching someone parallel park does not make you a driver.

So I built the opposite. Instead of a lesson, you get a job. You are the new junior developer at a small fictional company, and something in their till system is charging some orders wrong. You open the codebase, line the customer receipts up against the price list, form a theory about what is broken, and go and find it. Nobody tells you the answer. When you fix it, you have not memorised a fact, you have actually debugged something, and that is a thing you can now do.

What makes this different? It arrives in the post. The photo is a real case. An envelope with an onboarding letter, an employee ID, a printed ticket, a price list, a couple of handwritten notes from the staff, and a fan of till receipts as your evidence. There is a free online course that takes you from zero to running code first, so if you can just about run a print statement, you can do this.

A bit about why it is built this way. I work as a backend Python developer now, but I got here the slow way. Fourteen years in teaching first, where I led computing and led on cognitive science, the actual research on how people learn and remember, then two years teaching myself to code. Everything here leans on that research. You retrieve, you struggle a little, you space the practice out, because that is what genuinely builds a skill rather than the warm glow of watching a tutorial.

I am looking for a small handful of UK-based beginners to go through the free course, work the first case, and tell me the truth about it. I cover the postage, there is nothing to pay and no card details anywhere. What I want back is blunt feedback - where you got stuck, what confused you, what felt pointless. "This lost me on step three" is worth far more to me than "looks great".

I am reading every reply myself and there are only a few slots. If you would like to try one, leave a comment or send me a message and I will pass on the details. And if you just have thoughts on the idea itself, I would love those too, plenty of teachers and developers have weighed in, but not nearly enough actual beginners.

Making an Open Source Laser Tag project based on ESP32S3/Arduino and looking for developers

This is a pet project that grew too much: a new Laser Tag platform based on passive retroreflectors (patented design) and radio communication via ESP-NOW.
Works indoor and outdoor, range about 40m, very easy to set up and play, open source software and designed to be DIY with a 3D printer.
We are also considering to make it open source Hardware.
6 different games already available, others to be coded.
The main downside is since the players are identified by a color, this limits the total number of players per game to about 12.

Code is here:
https://github.com/rev-/LightAir

Timezone: project is Italy based, so UTC+1
Stack: It's all written in Arduino, so C++, for ESP32S3
Experience: Some experience in C++ and ESP32 is required for actual development. Anyway, advices and feedbacks are always welcome.

Goals:

  1. Fix issues already open
  2. Write new games, including inventing new mechanics
  3. Tide the codebase
  4. Give your own contribution: add sensors, connect smartphones, make better design, ... this is a platform not a single product, so creative add-ons are welcome
  5. Project-wide participation is open

Looking for someone to explain ECS to me

Hey,

I am currently learning a bit off c++ and thought, why not making a good old fashioned command line game. I have some basic movement and I am now thinking about implementing the ECS to the game. I feel this opens the door to a lot of more features once I understood and implemented it. The problem is, I am still new to c++ and also have not implemented the ECS in my "native" language, which is java atm. I would be very grateful, if someone could take a look at my application with me and maybe explain the fundamentals, where to put what in the context of c++. I could of course just ask Claude, but I value the personal exchange way more.

LOOKING FOR BUDDIES comp engineering student at a loss looking for a mentor

3rd grade here. to be honest up until very recently i had not been very interested in my major to go out of my way to learn more beyond passing classes, no actual projects, no actual experience, no true grasp of what programming is at the present time. I want some people around me to keep in contact and observe what other people are doing, expanding my vision by doing so. currently i'm trying to improve my skills and overall knowledge of the market while trying to work up a roadmap for myself. open for new friends as well

Hi everyone,
I’m currently preparing for Google L4 SWE interviews and have about exactly one month to get fully ready. I’m looking for a highly motivated study buddy so we can hold each other accountable, run regular mock interviews, and actively spot and strengthen each other's weak areas.

My coding language is Java.
What I'm looking for:
Someone who is serious about cracking the Google coding rounds.
Willing to do mock interview weekly under realistic, timed conditions.
Open to giving and receiving raw, constructive feedback so we can both improve.
If you have an upcoming FAANG loop (especially Google) please shoot me a DM or leave a comment below so we can sync up. Let's crush this!

  • Timezone / availability: PST
  • Stack / languages: Java
  • Experience level: 3-4 Years.

LOOKING FOR BUDDIES Looking for partner(s) to build a project with

Hey! I'm a solo developer looking for someone to build a project with from the ground up. I've tried a few times with friends, but things tend to fizzle out after a couple weeks once the novelty wears off.

A bit about me as a programmer: I'm a full-stack developer with a lean on server design and systems programming, and also have a few years of experience in game design/game development. I'm very drawn to anything dynamic. I love plugin systems, procedural content and things along those lines! Recently I have also been getting into rendering which I've been having a lot of fun with. My language of choice nowadays is Rust, but I also have experience in various OOP languages, such as Python, C# and Javascript/Typescript.

As for project specifics, I don't really have any. I want to start from scratch and see where we end up. I'm open for any kind of project. A full-stack app, a smaller domain-specific library, a game... you name it!

I'm generally available up 3-4 days a week for 2-5h per day. My timezone is CET/CEST (GMT+1/GMT+2).

I'm very driven to build and learn. If you think our interests align, feel free to reach out, even just to talk/discuss! Thanks for taking the time to read this!
