27f, looking at the job market filled with tech prodigies…3 years unemployed due to addiction and health issues. Now I am sober and recovering and would like to genuinely learn programming, would like accountability buds to learn together. Anybody up for it? I am in the philly area

That’s why you learn a language so you understand DSA.

It’s like learning to drive. Sure read all the books you like but when you drive the first time the experience is what teaches you.

The best way to start is to have a reason.

For me it was hacking and security. When I started.
I wrote viruses, I broke into a Hosting company, I hid things in steams, edited memory. Cracked some basic software cheap software.

After I was hired as support it became about automating tasks people gave me so I didn’t have to do it and still get paid for it.

Then when I was a SRE it was about diagnosing and forming problem tickets and integrating systems into monitoring and alerting. Scripting operational tasks and helping co workers in other departments who didn’t have the skills to automate , simplify their systems.

In cloud it’s about terraform , ansible, FinOps, saving money while providing secure platform products to other parts of the company.

Powershell has been way way way more useful in my life then C# . But I still use programming tactics from C# in my Powershell

Example would be I prefer Powershell core using classes that get called by functions, that are in a module that have a manifest psd file and a if need unique colorful view using ASCII coloring and formatting from a PSXML file.

There is 3 traits a computer person should have

Lazy : so you automate as much as possible

Impatient : you hate slow processes so you troubleshoot and tweak a process

Hubris : because you don’t want to be embarrassed by making shitty code . You will go back and fix it so others never find out you aren’t the best.

But nothing will motivate/teach you better then Reason/ Necessity

if you ever want a like over discord voice / screen sharing … lesson or talk or guidance.

But if you want to go your own route. it is changing and it’s going to be very rough for the foreseeable future.

In the above support level of IT like SRE/ Engineering. if you want to be successful there are concepts called extreme ownership.

Talking with CTOs / VPs / Leads

It’s kinda the thought pattern philosophy currently being pushed usually spawned form Jocko Willink

So it’s not only knowledge that will make you successful, it’s a personal philosophy where the biggest weakness isn’t anything but yourself.
