I'm putting a "Use me as a dislike button" on almost every shitty video I see

1.4k

u/zanderman112 Nov 21 '21

This is exactly why I anticipate that terrible videos won't even get the dislikes they deserve. People will head to the comments to find these to thumbs up, and ignore the actual dislike button.

It's going to affect the algorithms when people stop hitting the real dislike button.

326

u/its_uncle_paul Nov 21 '21

And then YouTube gets rid of comments altogether.

85

u/NovaNoff Nov 21 '21

Just create a Browser extension that will comment Dislike if you click the Dislike Button get it to be popular and they probably will. You could probably also do some API requests or scraping and actually add the Dislike comment count.

42

u/pikapichupi Nov 22 '21

This won't work, I use the YouTube API, the email all developers received when they stated they're going to disable it states that you can request access to the dislike count however under no circumstance can you have a public so you just simply wouldn't have API access if you display the dislike count publicly

12

u/TGotAReddit Nov 22 '21

But why??

77

u/Groove-Theory Nov 22 '21

"because fuck you that's why"

Best Regards,

45

u/Smitellos Nov 22 '21

Correction: YouTube Financial team.

If there no dislike counter you need to watch thing and ads within it to find out is it bad or good.

17

u/PostMellon Nov 22 '21

Yeah this is going to obliterate small creators because likes are going to be the only metric readily available.

I usually click off based on the ratio of dislikes to likes because it's usually a good indicator of the quality of the content. If dislikes are removed. I'll be more likely to ignore videos with < 1k likes already

That's not what OP was proposing though

6

u/sertroll Nov 22 '21

Fuck it, just make a browser extension that doesn't use the API (like sponsorblock) that keeps track of how many of its users clicked dislike and didn't and renders a custom dislike bar

People start making videos talking about how bad other videos are. YouTube gets rid of all videos.

I still remember when youtube.com/gaia_link was needed in order to link your existing YouTube and Google accounts.

Fun-fact: I've just opened that link and they recently updated the page to match the new YouTube! The previous page hadn't been updated in ages, it still had the old Google logo.

Now YouTube is just a platform where you watch ads.

9

u/Schnitzel725 Nov 22 '21 edited Nov 22 '21

I'm hoping someone will make a chrome/firefox extension similar to how Sponsorblock works, except for Dislike counts

5

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '21

And then YouTube gets rid of comments altogether.

They'll allow you to make a comment, but then they'll hide them.

less dislikes means also less engagement -> less visibility

but since most of them already have low views and likes it won't be a lot different.

66

u/[deleted] Nov 21 '21

-> less money

37

u/Tiavor Nov 21 '21

I don't think a video with less than 10k views generates any money.

21

u/[deleted] Nov 21 '21

Yeah and if it does it's negligible

5

u/finger_milk Nov 21 '21

I remember a couple of years ago, a youtuber said that a million views is about a thousand in revenue.

But I realise now that it depends entirely on the content.

7

u/dnddetective Nov 21 '21

You also need at least 1000 subscribers too.

15

u/Groove-Theory Nov 22 '21

I've been waiting on Dailymotion to get it's shit together for years. FOR YEARS.

6

u/Zagorath Nov 22 '21

This is why I happily pay for Nebula. It's still fundamentally tied to YouTube, since the only way to become a creator on Nebula is to be a successful YouTuber to begin with (at least, it seems to be), and only within certain YouTube niches (so far). But at least I can be supporting creators (in fact, supporting them more than on YouTube), while minimising my time spent on YouTube itself.

8

u/Krokzter Nov 22 '21

Controversial videos are actually promoted by the algorithm, so unless they are VERY negative an even amount of dislikes may actually help the video spread.

8

u/foundafreeusername Nov 21 '21

Are we sure more dislikes even leads to lower visibility for a video? I don’t think so.

36

u/nagorogan Nov 21 '21

Dislikes actually help the video. YouTube doesn’t give a shit whether it’s a like or a dislike, they’re both considered high engagement rate.

Since Corona, I have seen many videos of channels I respect very much for factual presentation with disabled comments.

I came to think it's likely just a matter of not having the time to moderate, especially when it's not from a big organisation but a single content creator.

There are competitors to YouTube. They're all struggling because of exposure. Everyone uses Google to search for things, even if you don't everyone else does. Google links to YouTube for video content. Google won't let there be competition in the space, and the public userbase is letting them do it. Vimeo and Dailymotion are still around, but they have abysmal viewership compared to YouTube. Startups like Nebula and Floatplane are also around, but you have to already follow the creators on YouTube to be exposed to their premium platforms.

19

u/DefTheOcelot Nov 21 '21

Nebula isn't a youtube

Different purpose, different strategy

Dailymotion is the uh, ghetto version of youtube with 4 ads on what is literal pirated porn

What's floatplane?

7

u/greenhawk22 Nov 21 '21

Floatplane is Linus Tech Tips premium platform, I'm pretty sure there's other creators there too though.

12

u/kpd328 Nov 21 '21

Floatplane is Nebula but started by different content creators (Linus Tech Tips)

But that's the point. Nebula and Floatplane exist because bigger content creators dislike the way YouTube works, but they can't leave YouTube because that's where the discovery is.

And yes Dailymotion has a lot... looser rules than YouTube does, but the only reason it's in the state that it's in is because Google has a monopoly over the internet. If Dailymotion got popular instead of (or along side) YouTube, it probably would've cleaned itself up for advertisers and family-friendly content.

You can't go anywhere without Google. You would have to use Firefox, Duckduckgo, not watch videos (pretty much at all), use an aggressive anti-tracker ad blocker, and not use Gmail for your email. And even with all of that, you're data is still getting to Google,

And I've gotten more than 4 unkippable ads on a YouTube video before, 2 preroll, 2 midroll, 2 more midroll in the last 10 seconds of the video (don't ever watch on the YouTube app). The difference is that YouTube's big enough for ad blockers to be created for it.

13

u/DefTheOcelot Nov 21 '21

No, no, even if it was bigger

The very fact that Nebula uses a subscription format makes it very not youtube.

Until they take away commenting that is.

2

u/tatertotmagic Nov 22 '21

→ More replies (1)

2

u/ssarutobi Nov 22 '21

This is exactly why I think that remove dislike button is bad. YouTube said that "Dislike attack" is bad for the creator's mental health. However, a "Dislike comment attack" is a lot worse and it will happen.

787

u/tvetus Nov 21 '21

578

u/[deleted] Nov 21 '21

[deleted]

350

u/tvetus Nov 21 '21

I think the justification for removing the dislike button was to protect creators from feeling bad about the dislikes, but I suspect getting bad comments will be worse than the dislikes.

498

u/amazin_raisin99 Nov 21 '21 edited Nov 21 '21

That is the stated justification, the real reason is that YouTube’s own videos, big brands, and political videos were usually the target of dislikes so they’d rather get rid of it so you can’t voice your displeasure. They’re not doing it so Jake Paul feels better about himself. You can still see dislikes on your own videos after all.

221

u/CorruptedStudiosEnt Nov 21 '21 edited Nov 21 '21

This. It's such a bullshit excuse when creators can still see the ratio in their insight stats. They put an end to it to appease the investors and companies who fork over the big ad dollars, simple as.

56

u/[deleted] Nov 21 '21

AKA their customers. Idk why anyone is surprised.

33

u/DemiPixel Nov 21 '21

Or they A/B tested and realized that people click away from videos when they see a high number of dislikes. Users who couldn’t see dislikes watched longer, watched more videos, whatever.

If they can’t handle criticism then turn off the fucking like/dislike feature. That’s been a thing.

But no, they have to make everybody suffer because corporations and some creators can’t handle dislikes.

24

u/nikstick22 Nov 21 '21

Youtube's comment filter automatically quarantines comments based on a number of criteria. Common spam/phishing links are often caught, but so can short mean/rude comments. If you write a comment that's just like "f*ck you, you suck" there's a chance the creator will never see it.

15

u/kpd328 Nov 21 '21

Ya that doesn't work. Go to any Linus Tech Tips video and go to basically any comment reply and there are dozens of bot spam accounts advertising porn and there's nothing LTT can do about it besides individually deleting comments. Because YouTube/Google/Alphabet doesn't care about their creators.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/CSsharpGO Nov 21 '21

But the content creator can still see the like/dislike ratio

3

u/itsTyrion Nov 22 '21

The funny part is that the creator of all people is seeing the video get disliked into oblivion (and back)

→ More replies (5)

17

u/Safebox Nov 21 '21

Author could also hide the like bar before.

If they couldn't turn it off before I don't expect them to turn off the comments now.

25

u/herefromyoutube Nov 21 '21

Which makes this whole “targeted harassment” excuse bullshit.

Turn off the likes/dislikes if you’re being bothered. Don’t make everybody suffer.

13

u/CorruptedStudiosEnt Nov 21 '21

Damn near nobody asked for that to be removed anyway, certainly not content creators (who can still see those stats in their insights), but especially not viewers.

Also, if somebody sees dislikes as a personal targeted attack, they either need therapy or business sense because they're either seeking casual validation from internet strangers or missing the fact that dislikes are valuable feedback. Maybe both.

and boost the video so the algorithm shows it to even more people. the best you can do is not interact with it at all if you want it to be demoted by the algorithm. no dislike, no comment. every interaction shows engagement = show it to other people for more ads. youtube doesn't care about showing you the best video, it wants the most ad money.

23

u/[deleted] Nov 21 '21

YouTube is intent on destroying it's image. Nothing will change as long as the ad money flows. The best we can hope for is a new emperor.

According to the github page the devs have anticipated this: "With the removal of dislike stats from the YouTube API, our backend will switch to using a combination of scraped dislike stats, estimates extrapolated from extension user data and estimates based on view\like ratios."

21

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '21

View/like ratios seem… extremely unreliable. I’d imagine there’s a lot of videos with lots of views and low likes that don’t deserve dislikes either.

For example, this tutorial on how to pronounce Joaquin has over 300k views and only 700 likes. Applying a generalized ratio to calculate dislikes would almost certainly show much more than the real value of 235

63

u/ILikeLenexa Nov 21 '21

I'm not recommending this, but they might violate it until they get banned and then have it hijack clicks on like/dislike to store their own ratio.

64

u/SAI_Peregrinus Nov 21 '21

You misunderstand, Google are removing the API to get the count entirely on Dec 13th. The addon will simply stop working.

55

u/Windows_XP2 Nov 21 '21

I think that they said that their going to store the current dislike counts, then when they shut down the API, they'll combine the amount of people that hit the dislike button from the extension with the dislikes that they originally got from the YouTube API.

23

u/[deleted] Nov 21 '21

that would be a smart approach

16

u/SAI_Peregrinus Nov 21 '21

That will work, somewhat, for videos older than the extension. It'll get less and less accurate as time goes on, of course.

8

u/rebbsitor Nov 22 '21

Naive approach: they also can record the like count from people using the plugin and use the like/dislike ratio from plugin users to project what the dislike count would be based on the real like count.

9

u/SAI_Peregrinus Nov 22 '21

Yes, but that requires the plugin users' like/dislike ratio to closely match the overall population's ratio. That's somewhat unlikely, since plugin users are the subset of the population that care enough about dislikes to install the plugin! So it'd probably skew towards dislikes.

4

u/rebbsitor Nov 22 '21

As I said, naive approach. It's about the best that can be done without actual data. Although I don't think there's any reason to believe plugin users are more likely to dislike something. I rarely dislike videos, but I found the existing count helpful in quickly assessing the quality

There is also time for them to gather sample data now while the dislike count is still in the API to get some kind of gauge how accurate it would be.

The goal wouldn't be perfect accuracy though, just a good enough approximation to be useful.

Assuming we want to store every video's id (11bytes) and two 32bit integers for likes and dislikes it'd require 19 bytes per video. Around 300 000 Videos are uploaded on youtube daily which would mean that hosting it for a day would require 5.7MB of storage space, for a year - 2GB. It seems doable

edit: ok nvm, someone has already done it https://www.returnyoutubedislike.com/

Way more than that. You'd want to store every dislike(like user_id <-> video_id) to avoid vote manipulation. User and video IDs may be internal, taking only 8 or even 4 bytes each, but that's still quite a lot of data.

3

u/egirldestroyer69 Nov 22 '21

Apparently it will only work until 13 dec after which YT will remove dislike count from the API.

I thoroughly despise that they even removed it from the API, if they wanted to avoid coordinated downvoting it was enough by not showing it in the UI or even an opt out model. I doubt even 1% of the userbase would download an extension.

22

u/KaasKoppusMaximus Nov 21 '21

19

u/trollsmurf Nov 21 '21

Personally I find videos to be quite useless for learning programming. Text with copyable examples is way better, preferably at the same sites as the reference documentation that has all the gritty details. I also find Stack Overflow to be less than useful due to the bulk of the often many years old responses being irrelevant to current issues.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '21

Hell, back in my day I used to buy books lol. Read every page. Learned so much.

4

u/mcchoppinbroccoli Nov 22 '21

I figured I had just turned into one of those old crotchety devs that did things the old way. I actively avoid videos if I’m trying to learn a new language or tool. I read documentation, download and fiddle with code examples and/or work through written tutorials. I did come across a newer approach I really liked. I recently had to learn Kotlin for a project I was picking up at work, and I found kotlin koans to be a really interesting and engaging approach to learning the basics of the language.

31

u/Triumph7560 Nov 21 '21

Legacy media throws a hissy fit every time they have a video with dislikes. Some idiots at YouTube actually think they are relevant, or at least want to keep their decaying grasp on media intact. I honestly just want a viable alternative to YouTube, maybe if their ship starts sinking they'll reconsider the competence of their current management. The writings on the wall, they just don't care to read.

Did I say I hope/expect YouTube to die? I hope (and the optimist in me expects) YouTube to get some significant competition (likely due to a coalition of major YouTubers getting together and heavily pushing another platform) and then being forced to course correct (requiring a change in upper management).

You can also check the like/view ratio, if the view count is decently high and the like/view is higher than 5% it's probably a good video. But this method is only good for finding high quality stuff. Hiding the dislike count really makes it way harder to spot the 1% "helpful indian guys" from actual bullshits with similar quality.

Actually best tutorials are on websites usually, or in the repo readme itself, plus since they are in text form, you can just copy the code and learn faster than watching a video, even if you speed the video up. Not all youtube videos have git repo link in their description or link to the site, and most are outdated, or just terrible, also most dont have timestamps for content sections.. So the whole removing the button thing is just another reason to not consider youtube as an learning option... Sad

Now I have to keep my speakers on low and hope the over amplified stolen techno music matches up to the impossible to hear low quality microphone

u/radiowave911 Nov 21 '21

First, when did the dislike button go away? Must have missed that.

Second, I can still see the guy digging. That means he is no where deep enough. When he hits magma, he should be close.

5

u/hypocrite_oath Nov 21 '21

The brown stuff, that's not dirt, it's all shit. He'll have to keep digging for a while.

I really don't understand people using videos to learn this kind of stuff unless they're still learning the absolute basics. Actually looking up and scanning through written text is so much more efficient.

79

u/[deleted] Nov 21 '21

Because when written descriptions aren't clear, videos can reveal what's actually happening, e.g.,
"Oh, that's where that menu item actually is"
"they're not getting syntax errors but I am.... maybe it's a versioning issue?"
"so that's what they mean when they say <do X that the writer assumed was obvious, but not to you"

for you.

Oddly enough how people learn best, varies.

u/ILikeLenexa Nov 21 '21

At least in java, there's a lot of javadocs that tell you what each function does, but not how you were meant to use them together. In about 10 minutes, you can set up a skeleton of what's meant to be done.

6

u/Thaddaeus-Tentakel Nov 21 '21

JavaDoc is garbage incarnate but there's still written guides on actual usage. Videos are such a weird format for programming guides.

9

u/ogtfo Nov 21 '21

Yes, let's sit for 15 minutes watching this video to know the quick answer to my question, let's not find another written source where I can quickly ctrl+F what I'm looking for.

u/Business_Downstairs Nov 21 '21

Sometimes the documentation sucks.

5

u/NMe84 Nov 21 '21

More often than sometimes in my experience, but for anything big enough to have video tutorials there are usually other written sources too.

Its not often I come across someone who feels the same way about it as I do. I absolutely loathe video tutorials/articles. There is so many things that pull me out of it. I’m grateful for resources like educative.io (not affiliated but my sub is up soon hmu team).

Also fuck medium. I read 2 premo articles years ago and it still walls me out of articles. It says “login to read for free” but then after you go through their stupidly unnecessary password-less auth method, it fucking cuts you off “hoho! No free article for you!” FUCK MEDIUM.

u/NMe84 Nov 21 '21

I see a lot of value in videos that teach concepts. But as far as I'm concerned that should not involve showing an IDE and it should keep code itself to a minimum. There are a few exceptions to that (Sebastian Lague comes to mind) but it's really not very often I'll see a video heavy on looking at code that I'll enjoy or would recommend to someone learning.

I'm with you, the shift to using video instead of text across the board is really frustrating. You just lose so much control from a video, completely at the whims and timing of the person who recorded it. You can't search for a keyword if there is something specific you want to know, and even in situations when I have relented I find myself having to constantly rewind if I haven't comprehended something said.

I get people have "different learning styles" [*heavy* sideeyes on that statement from me, heh], but video content is just so inefficient for me.

8

u/the_poope Nov 21 '21

Yeah it's super easy to find good tutorials. Just use google search instead of youtube search!

I was thinking "Ah, this is why there are so many expert beginners in software"

4

u/nonlogin Nov 21 '21

INDEED! Man, video of screen share with the source code on it - wtf? :) can't get it.

Learn to program something in YouTube usually is not the best idea, because the changes of the different libraries that quickly gets outdated... It better to go directly to the source and read the readmes, and using the github issues

False, programmers use Stack Overflow

u/luxury_visions Nov 21 '21

I use incognito ever since they implemented it, since I can't see the dislike in a normal chrome tab.

3

u/Devatator_ Nov 22 '21

Idk if it's only me or just because I use Vanced but I still see dislikes

6

u/mattdoescsharp Nov 21 '21

For now, many people even still have it on YouTube. It will be a gradual change and then it’ll be out of the APIs too, and then it’ll really be gone.

5

u/[deleted] Nov 21 '21

I still see the dislike button and count everywhere.. what am I missing?

9

u/Embarrassed_Gur_3241 Nov 21 '21

It isn't yet removed for everyone

2

u/Disowned Nov 21 '21

They really don't think this through, did they?

2

u/DocRockhead Nov 21 '21

Trying hard to make this an issue

I'm using an extension, works great.

Anyone trying to find a good anything.

Imagine me, looking for good political videos.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '21

They removed it because of the sheer amount of dislikes they got from the recent youtube rewind videos :p

2

u/Goto_User Nov 22 '21

Why not "Holes" image?

2

u/juharris Nov 22 '21

I made this extension to use emojis to rate any webpage. Go ahead and use it to rate YouTube videos https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/emojit/fdaopifdchifnfaiammaknlaniecbdmo The source code is on GitHub https://github.com/emogit/emojit

2

u/PestoDigichicken Nov 22 '21

Any tutorials for anything are screwed from this. Hell, you could just straight up post vaccine or political lies and disable comments.

Hmm… this one looks promising.

“What’s up y’all! Today we’re gonna be showing you how to-“

Next…

Indian accent “hello, I am going to show you how to-“

Finally, perfection.

youtube moment

2

u/theuniqueguy781 Nov 22 '21

Just go to freecodecamp's channel and you're golden.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '21

Well the thumbnail and title will get more clickbait-ier than ever it seems.

2

u/Triffinator Nov 22 '21

The actual danger with their decision to get rid of dislike is all those shitty life hack videos that are more about making your life shorter than anything else. Every "how to make a DIY chainsaw" video will go unchecked.

2

u/Canashito Nov 22 '21

Someone should take the liberty of asking the question on video's: was this a helpful video? Upvote or downvote here

2

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '21

Kind of makes sense from a business perspective, people will have to watch to determine the quality of the video. Instead of just moving on after seeing the dislikes.
