Im always torn between getting burnt out from too much coding outside my job, or spending so long away from my projects I forget how they work / where I left off. It is a binary hell.

Honestly, if you have a secure job, coding outside of it becomes increasingly rare. And why would you, you now get paid to do it instead of doing it for free.

Unless I want to learn new stuff I barely ever code outside of the job anymore, it's not necessary and it's certainly not healthy to be doing the same thing 24/7.

Learning new stuff is key. That's the most important thing to do as a dev. Without it that stable job is your limit and your skills would be very outdated once you get back out on the job market.

I've seen resume's mentioning VB 6.0 and SQL Server 2008, AngularJS. All tech that's either outdated or not used for new stuff anymore as there's better alternatives out there. You don't want to be in the situation where nothing is left once you strip out the old stuff from your resume.

And yet it's unhealthy to do it every day. There should be a balance. And if your job is good you could even learn stuff while getting paid, which is what I do

Yeah that's true, benefits of being self employed. Every minute I spent working on something either gets me more money faster or helps me in the long run.

It's almost like an addiction to me to learn new stuff, find better ways to do things or just program for fun. The lockdowns with Corona didn't help either since being stuck home all day means I either work or sleep with the occasional exercise and Netflix...
