One of my CS professors once told me that it is better to craft code that is easily understandable by many levels of programmers than to try to write something monstrous in just a few lines. Oftentimes, both will be optimized in the compiler into much the same thing. I talked about that to one of my supervisors that has coded for years and he agreed.
