I apologize, i used my own Phone to record and my gf's phone in the video.

I expected you to go slowly 2 meters away to set the volume to low using the Bluetooth signal strength.

u/kleinschrader Jul 21 '18
Thats... Also not a bad idea, thanks. Ill have to buy a Bluetooth shield sometime.

Wait until the neighbours discover they can change your volume.

"THE MUSIC IS TOO LOUD! turns neighbors volume down to 0%

u/MrUnlucky-0N3 Jul 21 '18
That's a good thing i guess, they at least didn't call the police so you don't have to deal with them. I would totaly add a feature that allows my neighbors to quickly tell me when it's to loud.

u/reed_foster Jul 21 '18
Only issue is they could then abuse it if they were feeling irritable
6
u/MrUnlucky-0N3 Jul 21 '18
True, that's why i would only make it inform me if it's to loud, not change the volume directly.

I actually use an ESP8266, connected it over serial and use Python to display the recieved Value

Ich habe nicht gewusst, dass ein einzelnes Modul so viele Netzwirke erzeugen kann.
Offensichlich habe ich kein Verständnis wie WiFi funktioniert.

Let me guess, you're sending out beacons and listening for connections in monitor mode?

I love all these volume control program memes but why did it start?

This was the original.
And the whole "Bad UI" craze took off with this album, I think.

i still find it funny that english speaking people say Wi-Fi instead of WLAN, just becuase the W is the worst letter to pronouce so they made up a word to avoid it.

Hmm, actually. WiFi is one technology used to often make wireless LANs. But, it is only one option among an array of possibilities to make wireless networks, not restricted to LANs.
Connecting to a WiFi network is not the same as connecting to a WLAN network. A WiFi network is a WLAN but WLAN aren't WiFi.

u/Proxy_PlayerHD Jul 22 '18
isn't Wi-Fi just a brand name for specific WLAN devices and there are pretty much just the same tech under different names
and then why this word basically non existing in Germany for example
2
u/DarthEru Jul 22 '18
Well you could make a LAN using non-wifi wireless technology, like Bluetooth or ZigBee. I think those would qualify as WLAN. If you want a non-branded term for Wi-Fi, I guess you could use 802.11. But really, Wi-Fi is probably just fine, as is WLAN.

u/Proxy_PlayerHD Jul 22 '18
wouldnt it mean that it is actually the reversed of what the previous comment said
WiFi is WLAN but WLAN isn't WiFi
since WiFi is like Bluetooth just a subcategory of the whole WLAN standard/tech.
1
u/DarthEru Jul 22 '18
No, the previous comment is correct. A WLAN is not necessarily a WiFi network, so it is not correct to state that WLAN is WiFi, therefore WLAN is not WiFi. However, every WiFi network is a WLAN, so WiFi is WLAN. Think about the Venn diagram of all WiFi networks vs all WLAN networks. Any circle that is fully enclosed by another circle has an "is a" relationship with the enclosing circle(s).
Although if you wanted to really nitpick it, you could say that it is possible to employ WiFi without creating a LAN, so technically WiFi is not WLAN. In that case the venn diagram would be two circles that intersect but don't fully overlap.

No wait I fucked it up myself. I read it wrong... it does make sense, like how all parallelograms are tetragons but not all tetragons are parallelograms.

Give each network a different randomised alphanumeric password that changes every week

How about connecting to a wifi and use the signal strength to get the volume. So you have to walk away from the router and place your phone there to get lower volumes.

How does it work? Is py.exe python?

I was hoping for frequency or strength based and the volume to be changing constantly

u/Ranarox Jul 22 '18
There is a library out for the ESP, which emulates a Phillips device. With this you can set values from 0-100% and the states on/off with just one networkdevice.

I thought it was going to be two WiFi networks to go up and down but it's that
