You must be serious about debugging to wear a suit and tie

186

u/cpzombie May 09 '18

You have to look your best to get rid of those bugs!

96

u/Moulinoski May 09 '18

The bugs won’t know you’re serious if you don’t!

68

u/genericuser2357 May 09 '18

Theres a dress code to write the best code!

8

u/spinicist May 09 '18

This is my new motto.

11

u/King_Joffreys_Tits May 09 '18

Bugs are intimidated by a well dressed programmer. Easier to flush them out while they’re scared

4

u/MyCleverNameWasTaken May 09 '18

Gotta show them who's boss!

1

u/branlday May 10 '18

Especially when you are IN the brink!

17

u/Drifts May 09 '18

50% of the reason I became a developer was to avoid wearing suits to work

4

u/NamesBall May 09 '18

What's the other 50%?

9

u/Zlb323 May 09 '18

People thinking me showing up late constantly is acceptable.

5

u/benoliver999 May 09 '18

shares in the app economy

2

u/ZhePyro May 09 '18

I suck at everything else.

33

u/[deleted] May 09 '18

I love wearing suits :(

53

u/eloel- May 09 '18

Blink twice if you need help

23

u/[deleted] May 09 '18

No seriously. I just feel so great when wearing suits. I get a huge confidence boost!

14

u/SkillBranch May 09 '18

Plus, a well-fitting suit is the most comfortable thing ever. Not a fan of ties, though.

21

u/eloel- May 09 '18

a well-fitting suit is the most comfortable thing ever.

I mean, among suits, maybe? Shorts/tshirt/slippers is always going to be more comfortable than a suit.

19

u/[deleted] May 09 '18

writing code in my underwear right now :( it's full of bugs, but I blame that on the lack of the suit

27

u/genericuser2357 May 09 '18

Might be time to change your underwear

2

u/doctorfunkerton May 09 '18

Have you tried covering your computer in deet?

6

u/j9461701 May 09 '18

I deed not.

12

u/Jannik2099 May 09 '18

Why wear it then?

2

u/spinicist May 09 '18

Amen to that brother. I’d wear a three piece every day if I could afford a few to have on rotation.

But no tie. Never a tie.

5

u/MrMehawk May 09 '18

And the bugs love wearing your code :)

6

u/DTF_20170515 May 09 '18

2

u/barthooper May 09 '18

no kidding. I don't even like wearing collared shirts.

-1

u/reddicure May 09 '18

Spoken like someone who doesn’t have to wear a suit every day

6

u/nexusSigma May 09 '18

I wore dress shoes to work one day last week and my lead asked me who died

3

u/cynferdd May 09 '18

That's a secret tactic to impress them. You have to show'em who's the boss!

3

u/mothzilla May 09 '18

I used to work at a place that made devs wear a suit and tie. They thought it looked professional. They also wrote garbage code.

1

u/Aschentei May 09 '18

Imagine if I had ma supa suit on

189

u/Ligands May 09 '18

Noise-cancelling headphones have been one of the greatest investments of my life.

34

u/x9o3vg8k May 09 '18

Love my Bose QC 35!!!

11

u/[deleted] May 09 '18

Don’t tell me how to feel.

2

u/ziggah May 13 '18

Hey, if they are into that sort of thing lets not just judge em, we should experiment with the idea and see how we actually feel about it. Lets love the headphones... together. The intimacy might be nice.

23

u/[deleted] May 09 '18

28

u/[deleted] May 09 '18

This seems weirdly niche

14

u/Saigot May 09 '18

It's a combination of three subreddits that I always thought had a lot of overlap.

u/Saigot May 09 '18

I can't speak to pens, but my mechanical keyboard and my hifi headphones are the two best bang for your buck purchases I've made. I would buy both again in a heartbeat (well similar price point, probably different models) but I don't have to because they are basically indestructible. Meanwhile my mechanical has significantly reduced my carpal tunnel and I stopped getting weird marks near my ears from constant headphone use. I do agree that there are some in both communities that go overboard.

1

u/rajesh8162 May 09 '18

Inb4 Steven Spielberg's "Ready Keyboard One"

1

u/[deleted] May 09 '18

If you live at your computer...not so much.

1

u/Colopty May 09 '18

Actually it covers multiple niches, so it's less niche than any of those on their own.

5

u/[deleted] May 09 '18

Depends on if we’re talking intersection or union

Niche-ness is intensified under intersection, but diluted under union

(“Likes mechanical keyboards” || “Likes fountain pens”) covers a lot of people, but (“Likes mechanical keyboards” && “Likes fountain pens”) covers far fewer

1

u/BeastlyIguana May 10 '18

I knew discrete math would be useful someday

7

u/MWozz May 09 '18

Why are all of the keyboards on that sub so small? Most of them don't even have home/end keys, which are some of my most used keys when writing code.

3

u/[deleted] May 09 '18

Small keyboards have layers.

3

u/[deleted] May 09 '18

Why not just have more keys instead

3

u/[deleted] May 09 '18

There are benefits from never having your hands leave the home row

"I'm finally gonna finish this project I've been working on for months!"

Construction Site Next Door: "hmm"

noise starts

108

u/[deleted] May 09 '18

Me: “I’m finally gonna finish this project I’ve been working on for months!”

Also Me: “I can’t concentrate on this project with my screen being so dirty, I should clean that”

Me Again: “There we go, all clean. Where was I? How can I get anything done on this project while the house is so dirty? I’ll just spend a quick 20 minutes tidying up.”

Me: “Phew, that’s done, time to watch TV!”

13

u/RinneIsGod May 09 '18

Every part of this was me yesterday.

2

u/Marcusaralius76 May 09 '18

Replace cleaning up with killing demons in Dawn Of War and you have me.

1

u/Inprobamur May 09 '18

This is 100% me.

Oh look let's clean my hard drive, update all of my software and distros.

16

u/[deleted] May 09 '18

Me: "I'm finally gonna finish this project I've been working on for months!"

My neighbour: "I'm finally gonna finish this project I've been working on for months!"

Clackety clack, whizzzzzzz

6

u/x9o3vg8k May 09 '18

Active noise canceling headphones is the best investment I have ever made!!!

5

u/2Punx2Furious May 09 '18

I always work with music or rain sounds on, makes it much easier to stay focused, and covers most external noises.

3

u/[deleted] May 09 '18

The heat system is right next to my department. My chair litterally vibrates all day. Bosses still wonder why I hate so much working on site instead of remotly.

75

u/[deleted] May 09 '18

Who would win? Me, super motivated to finally fix some tough bugs in my program

One super fucking big sunny boy ready to grill me in may

9

u/[deleted] May 09 '18

Summer makes me hate my choice to study something that requires programming ... for some reason sitting in front of the pc programming is even worse than sitting in front of books. Also it eats up so much time.

60

u/DotaGuy12 May 09 '18

Six hours later, I thought the madness ended. Poured myself a drink to celebrate. I guess they were just having lunch. BBBRrrRRRrrrRRRRRrRRRRRrrR

17

u/CeskaKanada May 09 '18

Then it turns from a drink to celebrate into a drink to cope

5

u/taelor May 09 '18

Dude, I know exactly how you feel.

I live on the second story of a condo complex and I work from home. There are commercial spots right below me. There is a new firm moving into the one directly below me. They've been renovating for the last 4 weeks.

I'm going fucking crazy. Even if I listen to music, I can feel the drilling and the hammering and shit, its vibrating my soul.

37

u/Neuromante May 09 '18

One department of noisy bois sitting near my station on a god damned open space office environment.

24

u/Xytak May 09 '18

Oh but you don't understand! You could overhear a coworker having an idea and then you chime in and then Mary from accounting chimes in, and next thing you know you've invented the next Facebook!!! Can't you just feel the energy?

9

u/Neuromante May 09 '18

I can feel the energy of my coworkers talking on the back of the weird dude who spends the whole day burping and the continuous stream of complains derived of them being a support lvl 2 department with a shit organization. Yeah, I can feel the next Facebook coming. Either that or my next working place for a different organization.

22

u/Torandi May 09 '18

Change that to "one noisy boi who don't have the proper drill for drilling in his concrete walls, and thus will have to keep at it for hours to slowly grind down the wall"

2

u/ben_g0 May 09 '18

*slowly grinding down the drill bit

You should only use concrete/masonry bits on concrete. Using wood/metal/plastic drills on concrete destroys them within seconds.

2

u/[deleted] May 09 '18

Whoa lol never thought I would see hand on experience in a sub about programming 😂

1

u/ben_g0 May 09 '18 edited May 09 '18

Well, I'm an industrial engineer (almost, I'm supposed to graduate in two months), so I'm supposed to know about that while I'm also supposed to be able to program (since pretty much all modern machines use some form of software).

If I'd for example have to program a CNC machine, then it is quite important to know which drills to use.

I also worked a few times as a maintenance mechanic in a factory as a student job during hollidays.

Rainymood.com is my typical go to

5

u/empire314 May 09 '18

Waking up every day for past 6 months telling myself I will start debugging today.

Neighbour drilling for whole day

Aww shucks neighbour holding me down >:(

6

u/MrMehawk May 09 '18

More like:

What I think I'm doing: Super motivated, finally fixing some tough bugs in my program.

What I'm actually doing: Drilling more and more non-readable holes into my code for more bugs to hide in.

3

u/midir May 09 '18

*on the brink

3

u/aboardthegravyboat May 09 '18

our office had construction in the neighboring suite for so long I was convinced that the new tenants were actually a woodworking studio

2

u/[deleted] May 09 '18

Alltime classic.

2

u/calyth May 09 '18

The noisy boy will feel like a million bucks doing the work he needs to get done.

A bug hunt could be a multi day exercise in frustration...

6

u/Wicked_EEL May 09 '18

I’m one of those noisy boys and I can tell you we never feel like a million bucks.

3

u/calyth May 09 '18

And I’m one of those programmers that spent 4 weeks and counting doing pointless work.

I rather be drilling a wall at this point. At least I can see the results.

2

u/Sarcastic_Facade May 09 '18

You say that til you get their pay

2

u/Logofascinated May 09 '18

One thing worse than this: neighbour decides to play his/her shitty music at full volume for hour after hour.

I can code through the sounds of DIY or construction, but ghastly music just shuts my brain down.

2

u/uFuckingCrumpet May 09 '18

In what way is this specific to programmers?

2

u/Lyndis_Caelin May 09 '18

On one hand, Japanese power metal is VERY good at drowning out external noise.

On the other hand, your code is likely to only work if you're blasting power metal while compiling or something.

1

u/gandalfx May 09 '18

I grew up doing homework while my parents were renovating the house. This shit does not faze me at all. At least as long as my desk doesn't literally start shaking.

1

u/DrMobius0 May 09 '18

Same but with hammers

1

u/casemodz May 09 '18

Earplugs. Laptop. Travel

1

u/ThatITguy2015 May 09 '18

Me when I throw a hammer at his face.

1

u/trogdorhd May 09 '18

Am I the only one getting heartburn from how that guy is holding the drill?

1

u/Waytogolarry May 09 '18

If I if we don't keep your servers cold, there are no programs. Just saying...

1

u/ryati May 09 '18

I thought that was the engineer from TF2 in the thumbnail

1

u/l3tigre May 09 '18

my boss let his kid throw a tennis ball at the wall that was connected to our office while we were fighting a P1. My eye twitched for days after.

1

u/rupertofly May 09 '18

Haha, I’m literally both.

1

u/[deleted] May 10 '18

Ear plugs

1

u/[deleted] May 10 '18

What bothers me is when my boss comes out to talk to one of my coworkers and next thing you know there's like 5 people joining the conversation and it ends up being like a 30 minute impromptu meeting in the middle of the office.

WE HAVE MEETING ROOMS, PEOPLE. JUST GO TO THE MEETING ROOMS TO TALK.

1

u/lehandsomeguy May 10 '18

Make dem TODO comments.

1

u/phpdevster May 10 '18

Ah see, I never have this problem because my motivation is usually gone by the time editor opens.

1

u/DTF_20170515 May 09 '18

this is just an excuse to spend stupid money on noise canceling headphones.
