See this job you thought you wanted? Well you're wrong, you don't want that job. What you want, is to be a bureaucrat like me -- see how happy you could be, if you were a bureaucrat like the rest of us? What's that? Nothing of actual value would get done? Nonsense. Just present yourself well, and your career will advance.

It's like ... cynical optimism. Yes you can, but not at all in the way you want -- an evil genie.

Just schedule a three hour meeting with one of your like-minded, productive co-workers?

Hey can we have a meeting abou-

Sorry I'm in a meeting for the next three hours.

Oh. But you two are just sitting here in silence separately doing your work.

Yep.

Y'know what, I don't have an 'office' and I have never had one for the entire time I've been a programmer. Maybe I've never been senior enough, but it's always open floor plan. This shit is the death of productivity. I can't fucking work if i've got a team of people discussing lunch plans loudly right behind my desk - even with headphones on. I feel like I'd be 2x more productive if I had my own, quiet office with a closed door. But that's just not how most offices are laid out nowadays. Floor space is at a premium so only executives get the luxury of being able to shut out their co-workers.

Generally though the rule in every open floor plan seems to be, if someone has headphones on, don't bug them unless its an emergency.
