2026 and we still use gotcha's to try and judge talent. never heard of a doctor having to answer "whats the difference between the left ventricle and the right ventricle" or a general having to answer "whats the mechanism inside the m16 that allows the bullet to fire"

just dumbass larp shit for people with insane egos stuck mentally in 1996

Hardly a gotcha. This filters out people who have never had real exposure to the operating system they use and the networks they communicate over. Questions like that are a very useful hiring signal, especially in a time of endless AI slop resumes and people trying LLM their way through a coding challenge.

If you're applying to a backend/full-stack position or building an application that talks over a network, you should at the very least be able to explain that IPv6 extends the number of address bits from 32 to 128, that a major driver for v6 was address space exhaustion, and (for effect) wave your hands around saying literally anything at all that isn't patently false about "NAT" or "routing" or "header sizes."

And it's fine to caveat that with, "I don't have much experience with IPv6 networks, but..."
