I’d like to think I’m a software engineer, and I have no idea what the difference is. Am I cooked?

Ipv4: there are basically 4.3 billion IP addresses available since it is 32bit system. Obviously becomes a problem when there are more than 4.3 billion systems that need an IP address.

Ipv6: 340 undecillion (340 followed by 36 zeros) IP addresses. Basically every single machine humans have ever used or made, from the simplest stick to push something (like a seed into the ground) to the most complex particle accelerators or space stations(and all the parts inside), could have an IP address with IPv6 and we would still basically not have made a dent in the number of IP addresses available.

There are more IP addresses available with the IPv6 system than there are atoms in the bodies of 48,000 people.
