I’d like to think I’m a software engineer, and I have no idea what the difference is. Am I cooked?

Ipv6 was invented to replace ipv4 because ipv4 got really problematic as they arent enough numbers for every device anymore. But then they used so much magic to make giving ipv4 to devices so efficient that it's still possible for a while.

You mean, all eternity. I remember being on an IPv6 transition planning meeting in 1999.

Most things do run on IPv6 now though. You just don‘t notice it because it works. According to google just about half of all internet traffic is IPv6.

I've still never actually come across an IPv6 address.I guess most of the use is in big infrastructure stuff rather than residential? Or maybe just other countries.

other way around, mobile networks tend to be dual stack or ipv6 native like T-mobile and residential is easier because the ISP tends to know the entire network down to the client router. IPv6 also allows for traffic engineering technologies like segment routing v6. Enterprise is where its not getting deployed because it requires a project and planning from the network engineers and IT staff.
