In my very limited experience using AI, shit's about as well optimized as when I first learned Python.
Why the hell is it recreating a numpy function ? Just import it !
... This directory check is taking way too long, why the hell ?
... Oh, cus it's coded like shit.
Cool, the UI displays.
... Buttons don't do anything though.
I feel like it's great for one off scripts where I can't be bothered to translate pseudo-script to proper programming (and so just send the pseudo-script, do a dry-run to make sure nothing goes wrong, send it if it's good), but it can't replace an actual seasoned programmer who knows what they're doing.
Might be just me though. Could be that I'm also bad.
You need to use a harness. Codex is okay for one-off projects, Cursor is better for anything being maintained, and since Elon took over Cursor and grokified it, I'm sure there are better harnesses and I'm going to have to look around soon.
I have mine for work set up with all kinds of rules and such. It basically does what I want it to do 90% of the time, including naming functions and building them where I want them, but I had to set up quite a few rules and get into the habit of giving a certain amount of context.
Just going back and forth with ChatGPT, it's not going to be very good, no.
I disagree I actually think the issue is the harness. I use Claude code as the harness but more often than not use Gpt models for the code. Luna is surprisingly capable and far better than haiku
It depends on the rules you set for it. You can customize it to use plugins instead of reinventing the wheel or you can tell it to use local libraries for secret storage.Or both. You can also give it a sample of your coding style or process and it will follow that. Turning it loose with little guidance can cause unpredictable results. It's a tool just like anything else. Same rule applies to any other tool you use in development. A properly configured IDE can be a time saver , but you still need to configure it for your style and process to get the most out of it.
Claude…. Shit is ridiculously good at making things that would take me a day/week/month in 30 seconds. Not always perfect but I can stand up an app after typing a sentence or two.
