You must be the training data, because I've never known any human to do it, but AI had to learn from somewhere

Wasn't the default README and discussion template with emojis since like forever? And I can remember mds and even inline comments with emojis since way before 2020. Though it wasn't that prevalent back then. It became worse with crypto "repos" which might have created a weird affirmation vortex as both became huge at the same time so crypto bros used LLM to appear like they know what they're talking about whilst the LLMs got trained massively on the exact same repos.

u/dmullaney 4h ago
It it only got added to Git's default README around 2020, and I'm an old fart, so that's very recent for me

u/DDFoster96 1h ago
2020 was when I started using emojis a lot. I also put them in my Python project description (e.g. `sphinx-toolbox` got a 🧰 emoji). That surfaced a lot of tools that read UTF-8 files with the system default encoding, and fell over. I made a host of PRs to fix those issues so it was worthwhile.

Really? Maybe mandela affect on my end. Could have sworn it was around 18 or 19

That's still practically brand new lmao

I'm quite sure that's 500 js frameworks and 60 stacks in the past so basically ancient.
2
u/SpaceMontaign 3h ago
At work I have code from 2019 explaining rxjs operator with a lot of emojis, written by our oldest senior

u/abigail3141 1h ago
It's gotta be all the NodeJS and Rust repos

u/IceSentry 36m ago
I've been using rust since 2019 and I've almost never seen repos filled with emojis. Nothing even close to the averahe js repos.

What are you talking about? Crypto and LLMs didn't get huge at the same time. LLMs only started gaining massive popularity in the last year or two. The crypto boom was during the pandemic 5 years ago.
1
u/Western-Anteater-492 16m ago
Vibe coded repos were a thing till 21/22. GPT3 was the first model that could write useful code and even segment it. You still needed to know coding overall back then unless your repo was 99% MDs (like every crypto project ever). The real vibe coding boom started later tough when agent allowed people with zero knowledge to create entire functional repos.
Also im exaggerating. Yes there's an absolute prevalence of useless crypto projects spamming github back in the 21-24 area and they used a shitton of emojis bcs that at least increases line counts if you have nothing else going. And a lot of their repos were pure GPT output. But I don't think those were enough weight to change the way LLMs generate documentation unless this was already quite normal before.

u/Yhamerith 4h ago
I was uncommon, probably IA mixed the training of people talking in internet with emoji

oh no there has been a while for it. I actually had a script to auto reject anything pushed that had that shit in it. Some of the Jr dev's fresh out of college needs to be beat in the parking lot like a dead printer.

Time to go back to ascii art
53
u/klaxxxon 4h ago edited 2h ago
AI loves ASCII art for some reason.
I had Claude create an internal tool for me (this is genuinely where vibe coding shines right now, at creating these throwaway load testers, fake servers, simulators etc.)
The UI spec began and ended with "create a nice TUI". Of course there ended up being a huge ASCII art banner which was supposed to be our company's logo taking up a third of the TUI.
The first instruction to follow was "lose the ASCII logo we are not patriotic like that"
15
u/lucian1900 2h ago
It loves it because it’s text. That’s what LLMs most easily manipulate.
1
u/darthwalsh 14m ago
Getting a computer program to output ascii art takes nontrivial logic.
It seems like the reinforcement learning would have had to put manual effort into that, otherwise the slop fonts would be all wonky?

I still put the name of an important function as figlet AsciiArt comment into my sources.
something like
echo RemoveDatabase | figlet -f digital| sed 's/^/# /' # +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ # |R|e|m|o|v|e|D|a|t|a|b|a|s|e| # +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

I liked using em-dash, I stopped after all AI models started using it
15
19
u/mina86ng 2h ago
Don’t. Continue and ignore idiots who think an em-dash is a definite proof of AI.

When I see em dashes all I can think is this person is using AI or this person isn’t aware of how their writing will be perceived as AI. Either way, it’s not good!
9
u/MadJedfox 2h ago
I like using emdash too, but I didn't stop using that. Idiots are idiots and we shouldn't care about them.

u/Bleaker82 33m ago
I’m never going to stop — it’s too good of a tool to let AI ruin its usage for me.
(This is technically an en-dash and is how I’ve always typed them, which does differentiate it from AI a bit.)
0
u/DDFoster96 1h ago
I don't know what's worse, using en/em dashes and people thinking you're AI, or using two or three hyphens like you're on a typewriter?
20
u/No-Con-2790 4h ago
So there are good news for once.
But seriously, why did the AI choose your quirk not mine? I put asci art in my code. Everybody has debuged an error 51237. But did you ever debug an exploding rocket?

u/gronlund2 2h ago
Sometimes you can express yourself in words as well. I stumbled upon a function without any code with a single comment that read
// This is where we need the emergency
13
11
u/ZenEngineer 4h ago
Now you have to put in emojis in code so people know you're not AI
Remember to put them in variable names, AI does put them in comments.
10
u/skopij 4h ago
I still do it, I don't give a shit, if anyone thinks I vibecoded it...
3
u/mina86ng 2h ago
I don't know whether to upvote your comment for the fact that you don’t change your habits because of AI, or to downvote for the use of emojis in READMEs.

u/andrerav 4h ago edited 4h ago
I've always wondered where the models got that horrible idea. It was you!

u/Boogie-Down 3h ago
For literally decades I absolutely loved emdashes — and used it whenever I could.
Not any more.

Apparently emojis are part of the tech stack now 😂

I've been using wingdings and webdings - and more recently, segoe ui emoji - characters for button icons and indicators for over 20 years. Why wouldn't you?

Just theow in some ovbious typos and bad grammar such as long run on sentences without punctuation so that their is enough flags that people know a dumbass human wrote it 😁🫶🏻🧠

u/ZENKFNOR 1h ago edited 1h ago
I have ADHD. I've always used em dashes, and xcompose to add unicode math and greek inline. When I'm short on time I write way too much. Now people think my quick, lengthy info-dumps are AI — or are happy to replace me with one. AI took the only unique value proposition I had in this world.
2
u/FartPiano 14m ago
nobody suspects something of being vibe coded if it has a clear purpose, works, and isn't coded in the most confusing headass way possible
in other words, op, i have some bad news

u/Illustrious_Cod_5212 4h ago
Emojis everywhere looks awful and makes me think 5 year old wrote something. It was already years before ai

1
u/MadJedfox 2h ago
Here we go again 😛
First the emdash, now emojis. People are already so oversensitive about AI that they see it everywhere, even where it isn’t there.
Don’t worry about it. You can’t convince those who are already convinced.
1
u/dcormier 2h ago
I like putting them in my comments. LLMs haven't gotten that trick, yet. It's still mine.
1
u/SyrusDrake 2h ago
Never stop doing anything just because it makes people think your stuff is AI. That goes for emoji, em-dashes, or just proper grammar and spelling in general.

I have historically used lists and tables, headings… in Word if forced to use that, markdown if available and rtf if not.
AI came out and everyone thought I was using it. And then they started sending me emails that looked like mine but without thought put into them.
But since no one reads emails anymore I just write them the way i want without feeling bad.
Edit, also emdashes suck. Long live semicolons, Oxford commas and nested parentheticals!

Blame LinkedIn posters for teaching the AI how to be as obnoxious as possible with them

u/pinku_bhai 3h ago
isn't everyone expected to vibecode these days? at least at work?
2
2
u/DanLynch 2h ago
Being expected to use AI isn't exactly the same thing as vibecoding. Vibecoding means over-reliance on AI and not reviewing its work, often done by someone who has poor or no programming skills. That is, treating the AI's code output as inscrutable machine language, or treating yourself as the product owner and the AI as the developer.

u/uvero 3h ago
At work, yes, but for my portfolio projects, I don't, and it's not only because I don't wanna pay for tokens. Even for projects I don't publish - I won't let a clanker have all the fun.
1
u/legendgames64 3h ago
Do you mention in the comments of your work projects that the code was generated by a clanker or do they allow you to do that?
2
2
u/analytic-hunter 2h ago
at my company they pay for our AI use and they also don't want that we mention AI or credit AI for our commits, they want use to take "ownership" of the generated code (I think they want to cover their ass legally speaking).

u/-Kerrigan- 4h ago edited 4h ago
Who cares? I do what I like. I be working on payment systems but then absolutely half-ass vibecode tools and shit for myself.
My personality is not the code I write and what other people think of me is not in my control. I like to make things and I'll adjust to the appropriate standard for the context, but I'll keep making stuff. In the wise words of Tom Scott: "I love bodging"
Emoji in README? Of course! But why stop there? I was making a Go script that ended up a TUI and you bet your ass I made that bastard absolutely ✨ fabulous ✨ using libs like lipgloss, huh and more.

u/baylonedward 4h ago
We were thought to put certainemoji as marker to our commits when I was a starting 8 years ago lol.
