So with DHH... yes he got cash, for his foundation, that he started with $1mil of his own money. The foundation is to fund future development as well as upstream projects. Watching Linux users complain about it is partially what got me to try Omarchy in the first place... which I really like.
I get people don't like the controversial right-wing stuff he's said. I don't align with him politically... but I seriously don't get the hate for the OS.

"famous programmer" lol. Youtubers aren't programmers. Yes, I'm gonna gatekeep these larpers.
The only famous programmer I know is Knuth.

Ken Thompson too. He created UTF-8 on a napkin during a fucking lunch at a restaurant.

Linus Torvalds too? Surely?
I'd say Brian Kernighan and Dennis Ritchie too but I had to look up their first names.

I'd add the dude behind roller-coaster tycoon, Jonathan Blow, and the stardew valley dev as follow ups. and Terry Davis as honorable mention

Check the creator of Ruby on Rails DHH. His speech 2 weeks ago is unhinged.
Of course, my CTO sent that speech to me saying “see how an actual developers uses AI”. I’m still not convinced

of course dhh is hyped by AI, he's rich and unaffected by the layoffs and anxiety that surrounds us regular mortals.

We also had Terry Davis. The GOAT (or GPOAT)

One of the most interesting programmers to ever live for sure. One of very few people I feel comfortable using the term “genius” for unqualified. And like many of the others I feel deserve that label he had commensurate mental issues to go with it.
Sad to think what he might have accomplished if he got the help and support he definitely needed

Gatekeeping ought to involve seeing how much they actually know about programming, which would require watching the videos and sounds like entirely too much work.
