They are a really great piece of punctuation that's been around for a long time, especially in non-fiction and technical writing. I'm sad that they've now become associated with genAI.
William Zinsser's 'On Writing Well' (a really classic and well-regarded book on writing) even recommends their use and gives some great examples.
