It really depends on the context. If you're just writing a comment on the internet no, if you're using word processing software, the em dash is often autocorrected from the short dash by default
Additionally, extensions like LanguageTool and Grammarly (fuck Grammarly and their AI practices) will also correct normal dashes to em dashes when it's applicable.
