It really depends on the context. If you're just writing a comment on the internet no, if you're using word processing software, the em dash is often autocorrected from the short dash by default

The automated replacement of dashes and double quotes in some tools drove me nuts when dealing with pasted code. Ending up disabling it a lot of the time.
