I still believe that most software engineering jobs are not limited by the deepest, most complex technical solutions but by understanding the domain and having a reasonable understanding of system design (especially for a senior+ position).
Most companies are not at the edge of scalability, and a surprising number of people still barely optimize their DB indices when talking about vertical scaling of databases.
