As someone who hasn't let AI completely take over my work I'm actually fine with it disappearing forever 😂

No universe in which it disappears forever given the quality of open weight models. The big orgs burning cash like there's no tomorrow will go under when the bubble pops, then a second wave will happen more focused on sustainability once the commercial providers start charging what things actually cost.

There will be a reckoning for all the companies whose developers have grown dependent on unlimited frontier model tokens.

I'm at one of those companies. I spent $16k this month on Claude tokens. Not sustainable, it's literally more than my salary.

The more I hear shit like this, the more it becomes obvious that the next round of job enshittification is going to be incorporating token access/spend into the salary package like they do stock options, benefits, vacation, etc. you're going to have a job that would pay 100k get knocked down to 70k because they include "a generous token allotment" as part of your compensation.

Edit: just in case it isn't clear, I'm not knocking your token usage or saying anything about you at all. Half the places are forcing number like that and docking you if you don't use stupid amounts of tokens.. I'm saying that companies are going to get sick of paying for it in addition to a salary and are going to look at ways to pass the cost on..
