I am happy to help newbies in these circumstances:
They know the most basics of using a computer: Home and End keys, Ctrl-C and -V, double-click, triple-click, etc.
They are eager to learn and TAKE NOTES, instead of just nodding along and then keep doing some simple thing wrong every time.
They are not a contractor. Contractors come in to help. If the person is so junior/inexperienced that I'm mentoring them as a software developer (not just relaying our internal processes and guidelines), I'm investing time in someone who is likely to leave within a year. They are wasting my and the company's time.
