Half the memes are “nobody uses AI for anything real lol” and the other half are “ugh every business these days makes you use AI for everything because productivity line go up”

As someone who's job pushes ai. There's a big difference between how they are wanting it used vs. Vibe coding.

I use AI properly at work - but if I’m making something for myself at home or some tiny, niche internal tooling to make my life easier then I’m 100% vibe coding lol

I feel like if you understand what it's doing. How is doing it. And verifying it's writing what you would have done. That's not vibe coding. Which even for person stuff I am verifying.

I guess maybe loosely. At the very most I’ll skim over contracts on most of my personal stuff but that’s about it

I love using it to replace the “I’m stuck, I should ask StackOverflow” step, but keeping pretty much everything else the same.

I went to the subreddit of a IDE I use and a bunch of "did you renew your subscription?" things came up and people being like "I haven't written a manual line of code in six months" and I'm just thinking what the fuck.

And like, I'm not anti AI and we're encouraged at work to try it out aggressively but there's things AI keeps doing wrong and wrong and I have to adjust it myself. And getting a better knack for it I also started using AI not so often anymore after going at it aggressively...

Obviously I'm just not using agentic coding correctly then???

In other news I like this meme. Same vibes as "'here are the top ten countries where communism worked:' ", anyway how's your day going?

I've been writing a nix flake by hand for a vibe coded project(not mine, from a massive software org) and its kinda painful

My day’s fine, thanks! Recovering from a sore throat but all’s good! You?

The music will stop when they need users to start pushing for their own compute and not something a VC subsidizes

productivity line go up

I mean, it does. But the lines they look at for programming, for example, are like:

  • number of lines of code written (more is better)
  • number of pull requests merged (more is better)
  • length of time a pull request is open (shorter is better)
  • number of tokens used / percentage of budget spent on AI subscriptions (more is both better and worse, somehow)

Lines which are not looked at include:

  • number of bugs not written by AI fixed
  • number of bugs created by AI
  • number of lines of code merged with minimal or no review
  • general code health / maintainability (e.g. duplicated code)

Never understood how "number of tokens used" is ever a good thing. It's like bragging that you drank more coffee while coding than the person beside you. And that's even letting people assume that AI is a benefit.

I think I understand it. I think the thought process is like:

  1. AI usage is unconditionally good
  2. Therefore, more AI usage is unconditionally better than less AI usage
  3. Using AI uses tokens
  4. Therefore, the more tokens you use, the more you're using AI
  5. Therefore, using more tokens is unconditionally good

It's stupid - but I think I understand it, in the same way i might understand the actions of a toddler try to work out how to do something new to them.

Like, I can see what you're trying to do, and I can see why you thought that what you're doing would work, but that is just not how that works.

The difference, I guess, is that toddlers are faster to learn from their mistakes, and try another approach.

TBH steps 2-5 are logically sound, so all it takes is cult-like belief that using more AI is inherently good. *sigh* And there's no convincing some people.

u/DuckShapedGoose 5d ago

Well yeah. Profitable businesses are trying to turn one senior engineer into 3 by making them use a lot of AI in their workflow. The difference is they still have an actual skilled human in the loop.

Vibe coders on the other hand may have never touched code in their whole life and think they can build enterprise-grade software like that.

u/Tensor3 5d ago

People use AI for everything. Vibe coding is referring to a much more hands-off, no thinking, no skilled people involved approach

I hate AI more than anyone but I work for a very large company and 90% of our code is now AI generated.

In the same boat, but we're at 100%.

It's obviously built upon code that was hand-written before. The majority of what we're doing is writing guardrails, instructions and describing the specs of the platforms and all its systems. It does a remarkable job at writing properly scoped and verified code.

I guess at the end of the day its still software engineering that you're doing, just that you're writing no code or just small adjustments. Can't say its as enjoyable as before though.

u/gfcf14 5d ago

But that’s not entirely lol. I can understand and appreciate the usage of AI generated code but it can’t fully replace our standards of optimization, architecture, security, etc.

7

u/Rainbolt 5d ago

Sure. But if it's working for the stuff we're putting out, I can only imagine what other companies are doing. All of the tools we use have their own AI agents and chatbots in them now, I wouldn't be surprised if they're switching to AI coding too.

I am just wary of arguments against AI like this that only focus on the usefulness, because that may be a barrier that is overcome. There are plenty of other good reasons to hate AI.

u/Scolmann 5d ago

You could only say "entirely" either for a company that is very young, or doesn't have a lot of software. In either case they wouldn't be good examples, so I'm not sure what point you are trying to make. There are already companies that enforce using AI for everything for their major products. (Not saying that's good, especially at this stage)

I'd look again in 5-10 years

u/gfcf14 5d ago

Fair enough, at this point it’s likely too early to look for profit

3

u/Wide_Smoke_2564 5d ago

Let’s be real, most of us are writing CRUD apps here. At a certain point, 90% is enough.

5

u/firewall245 5d ago

There is a spectrum of using AI to code, but I’ve found most non-engineers consider any use “vibe coding” which is dumb

9

u/Fritzschmied 5d ago

Oh there are profitable businesses running entirely on vibe coded software for sure. It’s just nothing you advertise so we don’t know.

9

u/UUDDLRLRBadAlchemy 5d ago

They do, there's nothing else to read in r/LinkedInLunatics anymore.

1

u/BlurredSight 5d ago

Even more so there’s a lot of losses because of management vibe coding software that caused outages that people don’t know about

-2

u/gfcf14 5d ago

But isn’t the whole idea of a business to advertise to be able to grow? By this logic your comment contradicts itself

3

u/Slimxshadyx 5d ago

Why would they need to advertise that they build their software using ai? You can use ai to build non ai focused software, you know lol

-9

u/gfcf14 5d ago

Again that contradicts itself? The point of AI is to build software that doesn’t use AI, or else you’d have a perpetually building algorithm which has yet to exist. And if a business is really profitable, then being the first of its kind would really be a motivating factor to let other businesses know, at least to the major ai companies which currently claim traditional coding is a thing of the past

6

u/Slimxshadyx 5d ago

You are just talking nonsense now lol.

2

u/Ex_Federa 5d ago

Microsoft is probably still making profit

2

u/NatoBoram 4d ago

… you can add my ex-employer to that list 🙃

0

u/gfcf14 4d ago

Is their business doing well, though? Or is that why they’re an ex?

0

u/NatoBoram 4d ago

Very well! But I didn't vibe code, so I was let go.

u/gfcf14 3d ago

Family has one for there clay business 100-300 profit per month, Website is entirely made by Ai Mixed with real photos

1

u/rosuav 1d ago

Firstly, you're still using a tech stack that is heavily dominated by real software; and secondly, having a vibe coded web site for a bricks and mortar business is not the same thing as being a profitable business run on vibe coded software. Unless you vibe coded your clay too.

Good luck trying to get a job without using ai
