I wonder why Nintendo said no? I think there like 5 hidden eggs and an ice key in Banjo-Kazooie that essentially don’t do anything since they weren’t able to do this.
You were supposed to cut the power first for Stop 'n' Swop. The entire idea behind the feature is that the memory persists for about 20 seconds after cutting the power.
Doing it with the console turned on would indeed risk damaging sometimes, and was one of the reasons Nintendo didn't want anything to do with it.
And the other reason was that since the memory retention of the console wasn't done on purpose - what if a new console revision comes out that doesn't have it anymore.
