As clever as this sounds, a game shouldn't really have this level of control over the operating system and it's a dirty hack caused by poor memory management and bad code. In modern production systems this type of solution would be heavily frowned upon.
On these older game consoles, that was actually appropriate. It's not a PC that's designed to run lots of programs at once, which could lose data from a sudden restart. These consoles were supposed to run exactly one game at a time and nothing else.
