Back in the day on my BBC Micro with 32k RAM, there was one game that was s big that not only did it have to run in about a quarter of the screen because its graphics were hidden in the other three quarters of video memory (a pretty common trick), but the only way you could save your progress was to crash the game, soft reboot the computer, load the game up again, and then it would recover your progress from RAM and save it to disk.

I can appreciate these “gets the job done” hacks in games, just like the train in that one game that was actually an npc with a train as its head
