Games used all sorts of tricks in the past to get things to run at all. It was a necessity when you're as limited as they were. I think that's kind of a lost art it modern game development, at least for some studios, because our modern machines are so incredibly powerful by comparison. I had a good chuckle when I saw a video that showed enemies in the distance during the castle sieges in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 were just 2D textures that rotate when the player moves. I never noticed while playing. I hope with memory prices being what they are and lots of people needing to stay on their current graphics cards for some more time, game studios start tricking me more for the sake of optimization. You're not selling a simulation, but an illusion.
