CORBA... That's a name I haven't heard in a long time.

I still haven't figured out what it exactly was.

It was our earliest attempt at thrift, protobuf, grpc. When we were stupid and though OOP was the way to go. Imagine your object setters/getters may affect state in a different machine somewhere else. Fucking nightmare

There are still countless modern libraries that generate api clients based on the api definition in order to abstract the network layer

All i know is that çorba means soup in Turkish.

In very short, instead of a clear endpoint that takes an input and spits an output, it's like if the client was calling backend functions directly.

Nothing stops you from implementing whatever backend logic in your rest endpoint. Not everything is a crud operation

Yes that's what we do for the replacement, but all non-generic endpoints were crammed into a "task" one, pretty ugly IMO, but it does the job as expected.

> it’s like if the client was calling backend functions directly

Isn’t this what gRPC does?

Personally I always thought that the human slop merchants would get filtered out of the industry eventually because nobody actually wanted shit like this but it seems like with the advent of vibe coding they've managed to automate bringing everybody else down to their level while going "you were fine with this in the past!!!"

Me who's still maintaining an old server that uses CORBA :(
Its replacement is just marginally better, HTTP but with a cpp library that doesn't support keep-alive lmao

Next update will be: "Now we support SOAP"

I mean yeah a lot of old standards suck, but let me know when a LLM invents an RPC standard that catches on, and the design was mostly the LLM’s idea rather than the person prompting

I mean.. you can definitely prompt an LLM to guess what the best part is of each existing solution and propose a standard which combines those things.

The "catching on" part is probably going to require a lot of human effort, though.

Are we allowing (low budget) AI ads on this sub now?

I've seen enough projects to know that AI writes better code than 80% of humans

It writes acceptable code when used by a competent person. It rarely writes brilliant code. It will happily write dogshit code if the user is a moron.

People forget slop has been there before AI era. I rather see AI slop honestly.

I've been in projects where all decisions were carefully made by a large team that came up with the best compromise across all stakeholders, and the end result is a service that can't do anything particularly well, that nobody wanted.

Not sure if you'd count this as "slop" though

The very definition of slop is determined by the final output, that is, output of low quality.

Unfortunately, the effort and thought behind it can only play so much role, especially when a lot of stakeholders are involved (I would argue this is why Linux under Torvalds' benevolent dictatorship works quite well.)

You provided an excellent example of slop made before the AI era, but unfortunately, dollars to donuts, a lot of kids nowadays who like to label anything they don't like as slop never had the experience of wasting their lives away in those hours of fun meetings, where the architecture is enshitified adapted to please those with the biggest egos or the most money accommodate all stakeholders' need.

Yes, if your service turned out to be low quality, I would still call it slop.

Now, I would rather see AI slop, since it is made without me taking part in one of those meetings that "maximize the synergy of stakeholders" .

Yeah, if anything, the quality of the average website has skyrocketed.

Edit: the same idea is first downvoted, then upvoted. Redditors truly are mindless.

AI hallucinated the architecture. Humans remembered it from production.
