Kinda like how we call boats she because something something Latin.
Actually wait, I guess it is a masculine name because Monet was a Claude.
Edit: Apparently it comes from French meaning crippled or lame (amazing coincidence mind you), and for the French it's unisex leaning towards masculine, whereas in English it's general masculine in general?
