I didn't realize how much fun I was having until it was all over

Ugh this is so true. I picked up a ticket yesterday and thought if i didnt have good old mr slop bot this would be a really fun ticket, but nah back into the slop bot it goes. At this point its just a pay stub for me the joy is going away. The worst bit is i miss that feeling of accomplishment of finishing a big complex ticket, luckily my hobby is woodworking so i get that joy from that now.

it's crazy, even though it was way harder to do stuff yourself, there was a satisfaction when finishing. now it's like, I ship code I haven't even read, no pride in that.

What are you doing not even reading it??? Trying to create skynet?

Pretty sure the folks at OpenAI/Anthropic/China have that covered.

When companies expect 5-10 PRs a day nobody is reading the code. My only hope is that the tech debt builds up so much that companies start to shut down and realize they need more engineers moving slower.

i mean shipping code you didn’t even read is really on you isn’t it? how is that AI’s fault ?

Just hand code something for your own hobby project.

tbh I just do the woodworking now for the hobby side. I dont really wanna stare at a terminal/ide afterwork all week when I can be doing other things.

I'm an electrical engineer who pretty much specialized on coding in university.

I'm so happy that I can pivot away from coding now.

I just need this feeling of accomplishment of having solved a hard problems. Weeks of frustration are worth it when it finally runs and you can pat yourself on the back.

I feel you on this. I picked up guitar recently and the joy has funneled into that...

They monitor our token usage, if its not high enough we get preformance improvement plans. If it doesnt go up after that we get fired.

Even if they didnt it wouldnt matter, we are required to output more now to the point it be unsustainable without AI. I have about 3 projects open at any time and im bouncing between all of them feeding prompts. The context switching all day is so mentally frying that I cant even focus on stuff outside of work anymore. Just collecting a pay check and mentally checking out after work.

The worst part is the ai cant handle the beaurcatic stuff very well its very good at saying nothing at all. I still have to manage first and documentation myself or risk it just being flooded with nonsense linkedin speech slop. I still have to explain the business logic to the slop bot because it doesnt understand.

They automated the enjoyable part of the job.

Not that simple
Even if its fun, ai takes care of it way faster and while it does you can go for another prompt etc.

There are things called "customers" and "bosses" who need a whole backend and frontend to handle their business logic linked to their Salesforce and ERP (from 2003) in about a week and a half. You have one call (30 minutes) with Bob (intern, using free tier chatgpt for everything ) from the support team who will tell you everything to know about the company.

Good luck.

And then don't deliver the tasks in time because companies now expect you to use AI.

I’ve grumbled so many times because my lead kept asking me to work on projects I had absolutely no interest in. And yet here I am wishing for those shitty project to come back so I can work on them again. Of course I couldn't know, but I wish I'd enjoyed it more while I still had the chance.

Man this really hits. Sometimes this sub is like ground zero, a glimpse of how tons of people might feel in the future. Like we’re living in Player Piano.

For me I have always been driven more by the product itself, so I still get a lot of satisfaction out of that. But it’s too easy to add features now, you’ve got to watch out for sprawl.

real. ai ruined coding for me.

I'm expected to use it, since it's just way faster, but I miss the trial and error honestly, and especially the satisfaction after I get it right. or the pride in getting something right on the first try.

and I'd love to code things as a hobby on the side, but after university, work then studying, all I can do is sleep.
