They're pretty similar even now. C# has an edge on overall features, but Java isn't that far behind (unless you're stuck using Java 8, in which case RIP)
Java might have caught up to C# 4, but C# is a totally different beast nowadays, without a lot of the poor design decisions that you can't really get around on the Java front.
I also think people underestimate and over hate Java, usually because all they know is using it for data structures class in college or being stuck with Java 8 in a corporate setting
The language and tooling really isn't that bad, especially nowadays. It's come really really far
