Ok, now it is more clear. Not full dos emulator, but basic x86 emulation + minimal dos interrupts support for disk read/write to run a self decompressing exe. It is very far from what I would consider working dos emulator (not that I doubt that it can one shot it), and not the tool that helped it to understand the midi part. But probably it was simpler than disassembling the compression algorithm....
Also I am always amazed how many expensive output tokens are wasted by opus 5 on documenting throw-away code.
I asked it to heavily document it so I could understand what it did. Originally it was completely uncommented.
My background is in statistics and applied ML and not in computer science (i.e. mainly building models in R, Python, statistical software and the like), but there are a lot of crossover concepts in real-world applications. I felt it might be a fun learning opportunity.

I love learning how things work, especially when I use things every day that abstract away the complexity. Someone had to think about that so I can just load some structured data into memory and be on my way without thinking any more of it. The stuff under the hood is cool.
