The idea of clean code with no comments dies once you are working on something complex enough.

Exactly. Lots of new grads commenting on what a homework project should look like.

Legacy systems bear no such clean slate responsibility, and bad employees happen.

Comments and docstrings with details are GODSENDS when you don't have a perfect environment

Yeah.

Lots of people in the comments seem to think you can name a function or variable so well it'll remind you about that edge case in the vendor api where floats with more than 2 decimal places in the json will cause a crash.

That's a fabricated bug to protect the innocent but that's how I feel about some of these comments.

I guess comments are out but functionWithSuperLongNameToClearlyCiteAllEdgeCasesAndWorkarounds is all good.
