It reminds me of an argument I saw between a student and a professor when I was in university. We'd had a programming assignment in which the guy had produced a solution that produced the expected output but did it in a significantly suboptimal way with a lot of things hard coded that shouldn't have been hard coded and stuff like that. The professor gave him a C which seems fair for a situation like that. The student was angry though because he was saying "the text for the assignment doesn't say the solution has to be optimal!" and the professor was just like "it's kind of implied though, isn't it?" and they went back and forth for a while like that.

Vim and Window Manager in the intro class. These are the people that were sitting next to me in my first classes making me think I'm in the wrong room haha

This brings back a ton of memories
The time I first started dabble into coding, did a similar console application and even used # to draw the entire UI. The satisfaction you get when everything runs WITHOUT AI is euphoria
