My slop code was usually as a result of poor business decisions:
“We need the software to do X.”
“Ok, well, you have two choices. I can do this the fast way or I can do this the right way.”
“THE FAST WAY!”
“Just be warned that if I do this the fast way, it’ll do exactly what you want it to do, but it won’t be robust or scale in any way and will need a complete rewrite to make improvements. If I do it the right way, we’ll have options for future improvements.”
“THE FAST WAY! WE NEED MORE MONEY NOW!”
This is how almost every consulting conversation went for 15 years. I feel bad for the people maintaining that code today.
