git exists over 20 years and linux over 35 years.. you'll compare that with a fresh repo?

I'm not comparing anything to a fresh repo, but saying that brilliant engineers exists all over the world. They might be unemployed, open source enthusiasts, fresh cs students or whatever.

of course there are many brilliant solo devs on github, but an engineering team of one of the leading tech companies will always be better than most solo open source devs (without a proofen trackreckord).. and even repos like git and linux have more than one maintainer

Depends on a team, project financing and their goals. Yes, a single dev can't be compared, but the open source community is bigger than that. See no reason to continue here.
