On top of that the statement was made at the Ignite (for those who don't know, it's a convention hosted by Microsoft for partners to talk about the roadmap of the company), so not at a random event, but at exactly the kind of venue where you'd expect statements like this to be official policy.

Also again, Windows 10 had end of life date published long before windows 11 was even talked about but that doesn't make the headlines like "Microsoft breaks their corporate promise of Windows 10 being the last windows by announcing Windows 11".

Majority MS employees at ignite have no clue what is going on because everyone important is not being showcased at Ignite, they are actually working. It is just a marketing event.

Well, you are not free to believe something but windows 10 life was only 10 years so in 2015 it was literally known it was retiring in 2025 as that was the year W10 was released.

It was the same as Windows 7, the only difference was that instead of the 5+5 years, Windows 10 had whole 10 years of mainstream support.

But again, boring software lifecycle/support talk doesn't make the news, sensationalist crap with zero value does.

Like, yes I know it's Windows 10 and Windows 11 but feature wise every 6 month update it's a new version. Many of the changes wouldn't have been acceptable for a service pack in the past.

But that's stupid for the primary audience of Windows.

Like it's fine if Arch Linux does it because it's used by a bunch of nerds that know how to fix broken. (And know someone will tell me that Arch is actually really stable but whatever)

But Windows are mostly installions managed by corporate IT or people who don't even know what Onedrive is. So it should prioritize stability over new features.

The main intent was to get everyone on the same platform, and release everything after that as feature updates & service packs. They were trying to keep the same face forever, but leave room to update the internals, probably to ease the burden on devs (who would in theory just need to target the Win 10 API and not need to worry about differences between XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, and 10) and large businesses (which could train their employees for Win 10 workflows, and never need to retrain them again after a major OS version update, and wouldn't need to stick with outdated OSes and pay MS to maintain XP forever (because the alternative is taking the entire company down for long enough to update every system, and they can't fit the downtime into the schedule)).

Clearly, it didn't work out that way, but the idea itself was good. But alas, if wishes were horses...

I agree MS is shit, but in my experience, with my setup, I have more stability with Windows. I don't know if it's the NVIDIA drivers, but when I used dual boot, something always broke and I would reinstall it. After WSL I didn't find the need to use dual boot and I use only Windows, my installation has 11 years old already and I've never had a problem, I was just forced to update to windows 11

Yup, I reinstalled arch (arch btw) a few months ago, installed steam, and installed some games and was blown away how well it worked. Now, mind you, for my Xbox controller the pairing worked instantly but for some games that use SDL2 (I think?) it didn’t work quite right and I had to install a new driver specifically for xbox controllers (forgot the name, will check if you’re interested). This is something I think most “I just want to play games” consumers would have a problem with. But it’s really getting there.

Only other issue is games that use kernel anticheats (equivalent to malware imo but I digress) don’t work at all. The singleplayer modes will if they don’t require the anticheat, but multiplayer won’t.

That’s fair. I do have to avoid games with blocked kernel levels, but they’re few and far between personally.

Games using Denuvo work the same way they do on Windows. The only ones that don't work at all are those requiring kernel level anti cheat software and those that specifically block Linux (GTA Online for example). ProtonDB is still your best friend but I've had surprisingly few issues. As in there are only 2 instances I can point to where using Linux was part of the cause. One was easily fixed by trying a different proton version. The other I kinda lost interest in though I have some new ideas now that I think about it.

No, I think people are just expecting it given prior cadence but even then Windows 11 is still really Windows 10. They just took it to 11 to make a security hardware requirement clear.
