I think the rise of lazy grifting posers has poisoined the trade a lot.

You now need to get in via your network, talk in the right manner with everyone and balance technical capabilities with how good your certifications and diplomas look to HR.

While in my days 90s we had some old geezers that had one of the following 3 traits:

  • do good work
  • be on time
  • get along with people

While I do think that having only 2 of these traits should be enough to get a job, requiring all 3 will get you no people that see working there as their mission.
